How Our E-Bike Trade-In Works

The Upway Trade-In Program makes it super easy to transform your used electric bike into credit for an upgraded ride! Visit one of the many Upway partner bike shops for an in-person trade-in. Here’s how it’ll go down:

  1. Get your e-Bike valued in minutes: Bring your pre-owned e-Bike to a participating bike shop. Using Upway’s real-time valuation tool, the shop can quickly determine its current trade-in value.
  2. Turn your old bike into instant savings: Accept the offer and use its full value as an immediate discount toward a new e-Bike purchased at the participating shop.
  3. Give your e-Bike a second life: Once traded in, your e-Bike heads to an UpCenter, where it’s professionally reconditioned and readied for its next rider. Extending your bike’s lifespan means less waste, more accessible e-Bikes, and a more circular way to ride.

How Much Is My E-Bike Worth?

Hey, so how much are we talking? People looking to sell or trade in their used electric bike want to get top dollar and know how much their bike is worth. The most accurate way to check the value of your electric bike is to use Upway’s valuation tool and receive a quote. For trade-in eligibility, the bike must not have frame or structural damage and have its proper battery, charger, and any keys.

Search among some of the most popular models to find out more about how much your electric bike may be worth:

What Determines E-Bike Trade-In Value?

An electric bike's resale value depends on a variety of factors. These include the original retail price, e-Bike brand, demand and popularity of the model, condition, mileage, and even things like the time of year. Of course, the buyer may also take into account any necessary repairs or worn-out components that will need to be replaced. Upway, for example, considers the costs of our professional reconditioning process when providing a quote for a used e-Bike.

The trade-in value for your e-Bike is based on a combination of factors:

  • Brand & model demand: Popular e-Bike brands and models tend to command higher offers. Demand can also fluctuate throughout the year with seasonal trends.
  • Bike age: E-Bikes depreciate over time. Premium brands typically hold their value better thanks to higher-quality, longer-lasting components.
  • Mileage and use: Bikes are made to be ridden, and we love seeing well-loved e-Bikes. However, heavy use, significant wear, or damage can affect the value.
  • Overall condition: The better the condition, the higher the estimated value. Upway offers a range of e-Bikes, from never-ridden and pre-owned to well-used models.

E-Bike Depreciation: How Much Value Does an E-Bike Lose?

Electric bikes begin to depreciate from the moment they leave the shop. The biggest drop typically happens during the first year, when an e-Bike can lose around 30–50% of its original value. From there, depreciation generally slows to around 10–20% per year.

Not all e-Bikes depreciate at the same rate, however. Higher-end models from premium or popular brands often hold their value longer, thanks to better components, stronger brand demand, and overall longevity.

An important factor that differentiates e-Bike resale value from that of traditional bicycles is the battery. The battery is the most expensive single component on an e-Bike, and it naturally loses capacity as it ages. A regular bike can remain in great shape for decades with minor repairs, but an e-Bike will eventually need an entirely new battery at some point.

That combination of normal wear, advancing technology, and battery degradation means older e-Bikes can lose value more quickly than traditional bikes, especially when a battery replacement is on the horizon.

Brand-Specific Trade-In

The more you know, the easier you can navigate the trade-in or selling process, even when Upway makes it a walk in the park. That’s why having some brand-specific insight can help when figuring out the value of a used model. Brands differ in their model lineups, overall demand, and availability on the secondhand market; all those factors can affect resale price.

At Upway, we’ve seen that certain brands tend to retain more value in the secondary market. Based on our data, these are some of the brands that fetch the highest trade-in values:

Overall, each brand is different, and at Upway, we have expert knowledge on each brand— trust us, we’ve seen models from all of them! For brand-specific information about trade-ins, Upway has put together helpful guides on how to trade in your used electric bike from all of the top brands:

E-Bike Trade-In vs. Selling Your E-Bike

When is trading in or selling your electric bike right for you? Selling vs trading a used e-Bike with Upway comes with the same quote, but the process is slightly different.

Trading in your e-Bike in person means you can get plenty of support from the bike shop’s staff and leave with a new bike right away— plus, you can snag any other gear you may need while you’re there. A trade-in is ideal when you’re sure you want to put the bike’s value towards a new model instead of pocketing the cash.

Upway also gives the option to sell your e-Bike online. Selling your e-Bike is a great option if you want cash for your e-Bike or are looking to upgrade to a model available in Upway’s large online catalog. To sell, simply fill out the brief selling form with your bike’s details, such as brand, model, model year, condition, and mileage. You can upload the original receipt to get an offer even faster— we’ll automatically fill in the details of your bike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I get cash or store credit?

When trading in your electric bike at one of our partner bike shops, you’ll receive in-store credit that goes toward the purchase of a new e-Bike at the shop. You can sell your used e-Bike directly to Upway online to receive cash and a $150 credit to buy an e-Bike on Upway.co.

Do you accept non-working/damaged bikes?

We can't accept Bikes with cracks or major dents to the frame or fork, that's a hard no. But issues with components (motor, battery, electronics, etc.) are fine; just describe them accurately in the selling form and we'll factor them into your offer. If inspection reveals a problem you didn't disclose, we'll either send an updated (lower) offer if it's repairable, or arrange to ship the bike back to you at your cost if it's beyond that.
How are prices determined?
Our offer price is based on the retail value of your bike, its mileage, and market factors such as demand and seasonality for your model. We also factor in our own reconditioning costs so that the future owner can enjoy a bike in perfect condition, with a one-year warranty.
Is there a minimum value Bike you will accept?
We don't publish a hard dollar minimum, eligibility is based on our acceptance criteria (electric Bikes made after 2017, from brands with certified lithium-ion batteries, no structural frame/fork damage) rather than a price floor.
