Start with the error code
If your display gives you an error code, write it down before restarting the bike. That sounds obvious, but it’s useful. If the problem disappears after restarting the bike, it’s a lot harder to explain at the shop if you can’t remember what was on the screen.
Shimano uses error and warning codes across its STEPS systems, and some include subcodes that narrow the problem further. I’d apply the same standard to a used EP8-equipped bike: consistent assistance, a healthy battery, no unexplained error codes, and nothing questionable around the crank or spindle.
