Electric bike batteries won’t last forever, but with a few smart habits, they’ll stick with you for the long haul.

They say all good things must come to an end. Electric bikes are really good things, so I guess the logic means they fizzle out eventually— but no one said anything about that finale coming anytime soon! Electric bikes and their batteriesare incredibly long-lasting and should provide many years and thousands of miles of excellent performance when taken care of properly. Here’s how to extend the lifespan of your electric bike battery.

How to extend your e-Bike range on a single charge

Before we get started discussing battery lifespan, I’ll cover battery range. These two terms are often conflated, but they mean quite different things. Battery lifespan refers to how long the battery lasts throughout its entire use, often up to several years. Battery range is the distance the battery lasts on a single charge, typically around a few dozen miles.

You may be wondering how to get the most range from your e-Bike battery:

The number one factor that affects e-Bike range is the speed at which you ride. Riding in higher pedal assist levels or using the throttle drains the battery significantly faster than lower riding modes.

The other factors that impact battery range all have to do with how hard you’re making the motor work throughout the ride. This includes things such as rider weight, added cargo, headwinds, steep climbs, or underinflated tires, which all require more effort from the motor.

For e-Bikes with mid-drive motors, pedaling with a natural cadence somewhere between 80-100 rpm also improves efficiency. Use the mechanical advantage of gears and shifting to maintain a high cadence on climbs or when accelerating. Temperature is key for battery performance, so avoid keeping the battery out in the cold, where it’ll lose a noticeable portion of performance.

It’s simple: Ride in the lowest assistance mode possible to extend battery range. Pumping up your tires and limiting weight will increase range a bit, too.

Electric bike batteries require very little maintenance— I’d say that the biggest trick to extending the overall lifespan of your battery is using common sense. Avoid big no-nos that will hurt your battery, such as using an incorrect charger, spraying high-pressure water near the battery, or exposing the battery to extreme temperatures.

Some e-Bike users will obsess about keeping the battery at certain charge levels or the risks of overcharging, but modern batteries have dealt with those worries already. If you are concerned with battery lifespan, I recommend investing in a high-quality e-Bike with a quality battery from the likes of Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Giant, Fazua, and others which will last much longer than cheaper battery packs on entry-level models.

Daily charging habits

I’m of the opinion that you should simply charge the bike whenever it needs charging. Some riders may geek out on ultimate battery efficiency and say you ought to keep the battery between 20% and 80% capacity; however, any gains from this are marginal and are much more of a headache day to day.

Your e-Bike is meant to get you places conveniently and as stress-free as possible. Modern chargers drip-charge or trickle-charge to avoid overcharging. And if you purposefully undercharged your e-Bike, then run out of juice on a ride, you’ll be kicking yourself for it. Don’t sweat it, really.

Long-term battery storage

If you're not going to ride your e-Bike anytime soon, there are a couple of things you should do to extend battery health. Keep the battery charged between 30% to 60% during long-term storage, either via a trickle charger or very occasionally juicing it up. For example, Bosch and Fazua recommend storing the battery at room temperature at 30%-60% capacity— Shimano suggests around 70% capacity for their batteries.

Don’t leave the battery exposed to extreme cold or heat either, like an uninsulated garage or shed. Long-term exposure to the elements and intense temperatures can have a lasting impact on battery health.

Keep high-pressure washers away

You probably know that water and electricity don’t mix. E-Bikes are very water resistant and have waterproof housings around the motors and batteries, so riding in the rain and bike washes are totally fine. However, avoid using high-pressure washers around the electronic components as a precaution. There are more bike-appropriate pressure washers that tone things down a bit if you really want that oomph while cleaning. For ultimate battery care, Bosch recommends wiping the battery and contact points with a damp microfibre cloth every once in a while.

Replacing your e-Bike battery

Over time, battery capacity naturally declines, and you'll know it’s time for a replacement when your bike can no longer deliver the range or performance you need. On average, e-Bike batteries can last between 3 to 7 years, or 500 to 1,000 full charge cycles, depending on usage and charging habits. Giant EnergyPak batteries are rated to 2,300 charge cycles!

When replacing the battery, swap it out with a high-quality, brand-compatible unit to ensure safety and longevity. And be sure to dispose of the lithium-ion battery correctly for safety and environmental reasons— there’s likely a battery recycling program near you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a battery that Upway doesn't sell?

If there’s a battery that you would like to purchase (either from a different brand or the Smart System Bosch line), just let us know! We can try to help you source anything. Please just reach out to either our chat or our email: helpdesk@upway.shop

Is it better to have a removable battery on an electric bike?

I’m a big fan of removable batteries since they offer more options for charging, along with the advantage of swapping in a spare battery to extend the range. Most electric bikes have a removable battery so a majority of bike manufacturers and riders must agree with me. However, a non-removable battery is definitely not a deal breaker.

Should I remove my e-Bike battery when not in use?

For short-term storage, it’s encouraged to leave the battery on the bike where it’s designed to be. For long-term storage, take it out and keep it at room temperature. Modern chargers are designed to prevent overcharging, but keeping it at 100% charge levels still puts extra stress on the battery.

Key Takeaways

  1. Ride Smart: Use lower assist levels, reduce load, and maintain proper tire pressure to maximize battery range on each ride.
  2. Charge Wisely: Daily charging is fine, but avoid extreme discharges and keep batteries between 30–60% when storing long-term.
  3. Protect and Replace: Keep batteries away from harsh temps, avoid high-pressure washing, and use only high-quality replacements when needed.
