Disc brakes operate with very little clearance. A wheel installed slightly differently, a bumped rotor, or a brake lever squeezed while the wheel was off can all create rubbing. Before adjusting the caliper or replacing parts, check what changed during transport.

If the brakes were quiet before the trip and started scraping as soon as you unloaded the bike, work backward through what happened.


The most common causes are:


  • The wheel wasn’t fully seated after being reinstalled.

What to Check First

Don’t begin by loosening the caliper or trying to bend the rotor back into place. Lift the affected wheel, spin it slowly, and listen to the pattern.

Check the Wheel and Rotor First

If the wheel was removed, confirm that it sits squarely in the fork or frame. Check that the thru-axle is threaded correctly or the quick release is fully seated and secure.


A small change in wheel position is enough to move the rotor inside the caliper. Spin the wheel again after reinstalling it. If the sound disappears, there’s no reason to start adjusting the brake. Check the Brake Pads and Caliper

If the rotor looks straight, consider whether anyone squeezed the brake lever while the wheel was off. On hydraulic brakes, the pads may move closer together when the lever is pulled without the rotor between them. When the wheel goes back on, the rotor can have much less clearance than before. That’s why mechanics use brake pad spacers whenever a wheel is removed. A spacer weighs almost nothing and is worth keeping with your rack or riding gear.


Mechanical disc brakes don’t have hydraulic pistons, but cable tension or pad adjustment can still leave too little clearance. If the rotor is straight and the wheel is seated correctly, look through the caliper and see whether one pad sits unusually close to the rotor.


Only move on to caliper alignment after checking the wheel, axle, and rotor. If the rotor stays closer to one pad through the entire rotation, the caliper may need to be centered.

When Brake Rub Is More Serious

A faint scrape is different from a wheel that barely turns. That’s where I’d stop troubleshooting and take a closer look.


Inspect the brake more carefully if:


  • The wheel is difficult to spin by hand

  • The lever pulls much farther than it did before
  • Hydraulic fluid is visible around the lever or caliper
  • Braking power has decreased

A slight rotor wobble may be repairable. A cracked or heavily damaged rotor should be replaced.

Brake bleeding also isn’t the default fix. A bleed addresses air in a hydraulic system or inconsistent lever feel.
