Electric bikes can get a new lease on life when they’re refurbished and resold, extending the lifespan of the product and giving their new owners a sweet deal. But to know just how good a value certified pre-owned model can be, it’s worth knowing exactly how these used e-Bikes are inspected and reconditioned. Since 2021, Upway has certified over 20,000 refurbished e-Bikes that have been sold in the US and Europe— here’s a look inside the process.

Not all used bikes are inspected and certified

First things first, there’s a difference between an electric bike that’s “used” and one that’s “refurbished”. Other labels for these kinds of refurbished bikes include “reconditioned” or “certified pre-owned”. Used or pre-owned bikes simply refer to the fact that there was a previous owner. In fact, the bike may barely be used at all with very little mileage— perhaps a showroom bike or a returned product— but it cannot be considered brand-new.

Certified pre-owned e-Bikes, however, have undergone a thorough inspection process and received any necessary servicing or replacement parts to bring them up to like-new condition. These reconditioned models have been quality checked by professionals and come with a warranty on electrical and mechanical parts, such as Upway’s 1-year standard warranty.

Platforms that certify pre-owned e-Bikes in the US:

  • Upway
  • Trek Red Barn Refresh
  • The Pro’s Closet Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program
  • Local bike shops may also certify pre-owned bikes

All this work happens in refurbishment hubs— at Upway, we call them UpCenters— equipped with repair stands, work benches, diagnostic software, and more for the master mechanics. Upway has UpCenters in Los Angeles and New York City, while other retailers have their hubs in different regions of the US.

Reliable, transparent sourcing

Pre-owned electric bikes begin their certification or refurbishment journey by making their way to retailers like Upway that specialize in giving models a second life. Many pre-owned e-Bikes are brand returns, rental fleets, trade-ins, or used e-Bikes sold by individuals. Retailers can’t accept bikes with structural damage like a cracked frame, and there should be no missing parts. These main channels to source bikes help ensure quality and avoid buying stolen bikes or subpar models. Upway lists information on the previous owner of each electric bike (brand, bike shop, or individual), including where and when the model arrived at our UpCenter.

Inspection checklist

The reconditioning process is guided by an exhaustive inspection checklist that must be completed before an electric bike is certified. Upway uses a 50-point inspection to ensure the quality of the bike and identify any issues that need to be resolved. All models published to our online catalog include their individualized 50-point inspection report so customers can see exactly what was checked, including any repairs made or replaced parts.

Electrical diagnostics

Refurbishing an electric bike means checking the electrical components and servicing them when required. The drive system includes the battery, motor, controller, and display, and unlike most mechanical problems, issues here can go unseen to the naked eye. Refurbishment centers have specialized tools and specific software to diagnose and fix any issues. While serious electrical issues are actually quite uncommon, Upway is prepared to solve them. Upway technicians test battery health and replace any battery that has less than 80% with a fresh one.

Repairs and replacement parts

Mechanics make any repairs that are required after the initial inspection, including replacement parts for worn-out or broken components. The most common repairs include replacing parts that see a lot of wear, like tires, brake pads, and the chain. Other common servicing tasks include bleeding hydraulic brakes, truing wheels, lubricating the chain, and adjusting brakes and derailleurs. All repairs to a specific bike will be included in the inspection report on the model page.

Test ride and final quality check

It wouldn’t be a proper inspection without a test ride and final sign-off. Mechanics take each bike for a full test ride to inspect the performance of brakes, drivetrain, e-assist system, and lights, among other functions. A senior mechanic conducts a final quality check, and the bike is ready to be cleaned, photographed, and posted for sale.

Key Takeaways

  1. Certified difference: Refurbished e-Bikes undergo a 50-point inspection, unlike standard “used” bikes.
  2. Transparency matters: Sourcing avoids damaged or stolen bikes, with full inspection reports shared.
  3. Peace of mind: Electrical systems, parts, and safety features are tested, repaired, and warrantied.
