A strange sound near the motor can make an e-Bike feel like things are going to get expensive in a hurry. A click near the crank, a grind from the rear hub motor, a tick that shows up once per pedal stroke, or a knock under load can all make you think the motor is failing.

Sometimes it really is the motor. A worn bearing, damaged gear, loose motor cover, electrical fault, or internal drive issue can make noise. But a lot of “motor noise” starts somewhere else: pedals, crank arms, chainring bolts, chain, cassette, derailleur, spokes, brake rotor, axle hardware, or a loose part that only speaks up when the bike is under load.

Start by figuring out exactly when and where the noise comes from. Does it happen only while pedaling? Only with assistance? Once per wheel rotation? After a bump? In one gear? Under heavy load? That pattern tells you more than the sound alone.

First, don't trust your ears too much. Noise travels through an e-Bike frame in strange ways. A clicking pedal can sound like a motor problem. A loose spoke can sound like a rear hub motor. A dry chain can make a mid-drive motor feel rough, even when the drive unit is doing its job.

Does the sound happen with the motor off?

First, turn the assist off and pedal the bike. If the clicking, creaking, rubbing, or grinding persists, the motor may not be the source. Look at the regular bike parts first.


If the noise disappears with the assist off and comes back only when the motor engages, pay closer attention to the motor system, drivetrain load, wiring, torque sensor behavior, and error codes.

But also still check the simple stuff first: rotor rub, loose spokes, a tire issue, or a fender stay touching the wheel.

What should you check around the pedals and drivetrain?

A lot of clicking near the "motor" is really pedaling noise. Start with the pedals. A dry or loose pedal spindle can click under load. Make sure both pedals are tight. Then check the crank arms. A slightly loose crank arm can make a sharp click every time you push down. Riding a loose crank can damage the interface, so it's worth catching early.


Next, check the chainring bolts if your bike has them. Loose bolts can click or creak when torque increases. On a mid-drive e-Bike, that load can be high, especially when climbing a steep hill. Then move to the chain and gears. A stiff chain link, dry chain, worn cassette, misaligned derailleur, bent hanger, or poor indexing can create clicking that changes by gear. If the sound gets better or worse when you shift, the drivetrain is probably part of the story.


Clean and lubricate the chain. Wipe off the extra lube. Shift through the gears. Watch the derailleur. Look for a chain that climbs poorly, skips, or chatters on one part of the cassette. If the bike has been dropped on the drivetrain side, the derailleur hanger deserves a look.


What I wouldn't do is keep mashing uphill in a bad gear while the bike clicks louder. That's how a small adjustment turns into a steep chain, cassette, or derailleur bill.

Why the motor may not be the problem

If the sound matches wheel speed rather than pedal stroke, move on and look elsewhere, away from the crank area. Spin the wheels and listen closely. A bent brake rotor can often make a steady scrape. A rotor bolt, spoke, magnet, fender stay, reflector, or loose accessory can tick once per rotation. A spoke under low tension can ping or click. A tire with debris stuck in the tread can appear to be a mechanical issue.


Many hub motors make a faint hum under power, especially during acceleration, but that’s a normal sound. A new metallic click, rough grind, or rumble is different. Check the axle nuts or thru-axle, the visible motor cable, the brake rotor, the spokes, and the wheel seating. Don't pull on the motor cable. If the cable jacket is damaged, kinked, crushed, or stretched tight near the axle, stop there.


Brake noise can also fool you. Contaminated pads, a warped rotor, or a caliper that's slightly off-center can cause a noise that's blamed on the motor. If the sound changes when you lightly apply the brake, that's a strong clue.

When is it probably a real motor issue?

After you've checked the drivetrain, pedals, crank arms, brakes, spokes, wheel, and loose hardware, then the motor moves higher on the list.


A motor issue moves higher on the suspect list if the sound appears only when assist engages, worsens in higher assist modes, occurs under load, accompanies vibration, causes power loss, or occurs with an error code.


Possible motor-related causes include worn motor bearings, damaged internal gears, loose motor hardware, controller trouble, Hall sensor issues on some hub systems, water intrusion, or a drive-unit fault. On some mid-drive systems, a torque sensor or an issue in the bottom bracket area can also make the bike feel rough under pressure. Some systems sound better under load than others, but “normal” should be steady and familiar. New, sharp, harsh, or growing noise deserves attention.


Don't open the motor at home unless you’re a mechanic, know that specific system, and have the right tools.
