Possibly, so check the motor cable and plugs first. I've seen cables get pinched, and connections come loose, so look for that before assuming the motor is shot. Turn everything off and remove the battery (if possible). If the wiring looks good and Error 09 persists, contact your mechanic.

What Does Bafang Error 09 Mean?
Bafang Error 09, also called Bafang error code 09, points to a problem with the motor’s phase circuit, called a motor phase-winding fault. The motor has three electrical phases that the controller powers in sequence, and if there’s a problem with a phase wire or the windings inside the motor, the e-Bike may lose assistance or stop providing motor power altogether.
Depending on your Bafang system, you might see Error 09 or 09H on the display. To be sure, check your motor and display manual, since error codes aren’t identical across every e-Bike system.
For other motor and controller problems, see Upway’s Bafang error codes guide.

What Causes Bafang Error 09?
Sure, the motor windings could be damaged, but first check the cable connecting the motor to the controller before assuming the worst.
Here are several possible causes.
Common Causes of Bafang Error 09
| Possible Cause | What's Happening |
|---|---|
| Damaged motor cable | A phase wire may be cut, pinched, or broken |
| Loose or damaged connector | The connection between the motor and controller may be interrupted |
| Failed motor winding | The copper windings inside the motor may be damaged or shorted |
| Controller problem | The controller may not be delivering power to the motor phases correctly |
| Water damage | Moisture or corrosion may damage electrical connections or motor components |
I’ve gotten e-Bikes back from the shop where one problem was fixed, only to discover something else wasn’t quite right. It happens. So if Error 09 appears right after a repair, check the connectors and wiring. Possibly something wasn’t plugged in completely, or a cable got pinched during the work.
If all appears fine at first glance, have your mechanic check the motor and controller. Buying a new motor should be a last resort, unless testing confirms it’s necessary.
How to Fix Bafang Error 09

First things first: turn the bike off, give it a minute, and restart it. If Error 09 comes right back, don’t keep turning it on and off, hoping it’ll disappear. Once is enough.
Here’s what I’d check next:
- Inspect the motor cable. With the bike turned off, remove the battery if possible. Then follow the cable coming out of the motor. Look for cuts, exposed wires, or spots where the cable's been pinched. Check around the frame and rear brake rotor, too. I've seen firsthand what happens when a motor cable gets too close to a spinning rotor.
- Check the connectors. Look for loose plugs, bent pins, dirt, moisture, or corrosion. If the plugs are designed to come apart, disconnect them with the power off, and make sure everything's dry before plugging them back in. Don't force anything, especially if the pins look damaged.
- Look for signs of overheating. Melted plastic around a connector, discolored wiring, or a burnt smell are all bad signs. If you notice any of these, don’t restart the bike. Take it to your mechanic.
- Have the motor and controller tested. If the Bafang error code keeps returning and the wiring looks fine, the problem may be inside the motor. A shop familiar with Bafang systems can test the motor phase wiring and windings to determine whether the motor or controller needs replacing.
I don’t attempt to repair the windings inside the motor. That’s beyond the kind of maintenance I’d recommend doing at home.
Can You Ride an E-Bike with Bafang Error 09?

Don't ride with the motor turned on. Error 09 points to an electrical problem, and continuing to use the motor could cause more damage. However, you might still be able to pedal home with the bike turned off. After all, it's still a bicycle. I've done this plenty of times on rear-hub motor bikes, pedaling heavy e-Bikes up steep hills around the Sierra foothills without assistance. It's a terribly un-fun workout, especially when you weren't planning on it.
Before heading anywhere, though, make sure the wheels turn freely, the brakes work, and there's no obvious electrical damage. If something smells burnt, the motor feels unusually hot, or the wheel is dragging, leave the bike somewhere safe and arrange a pickup.
Does Bafang Error 09 Mean You Need a New Motor?
It might. If the phase windings inside the motor are damaged, replacement could be the logical solution. But hopefully it’s something less expensive, like a damaged cable or loose connection. And on certain Bafang systems, you might need to replace the controller instead. Have your shop diagnose the problem before ordering parts. And hopefully your bike is still under warranty.
After years of taking my e-Bikes to the shop, I’ve learned something else: don’t buy a bike your local shop can’t work on. I’ve seen plenty of inexpensive, no-name brands that can be difficult or impossible for my shop to service when something goes wrong. I’ve personally owned bikes that couldn’t be serviced, and so has a friend. No one wants to spend a pretty penny just to end up with a broken, unserviceable bike after a season or two.
Before buying, call your shop and ask which brands they service. Check reviews, talk to friends, and find out whether replacement parts are available. Do your homework before dropping serious money.
Better yet, just shop on Upway! Their certified pre-owned e-bikes go through a 50-point inspection by certified mechanics and come with a limited one-year warranty and a 14-day return policy. And with certified pre-owned pricing on top brands, you can save up to 60%!
Plus, Upway’s product pages include the bike’s model year, size, mileage, motor specifications, battery capacity, and other components. You’ll also find an inspection report, including info about the battery, motor, and display, along with the mechanic’s notes on the bike’s condition. That’s a lot of great information to have before buying!

Key Takeaways
- Error 09 could mean a new motor. If the windings inside the motor have failed, you may be looking at a replacement. But don't assume that's the problem just yet.
- Take a good look at the wiring. A loose plug or damaged cable could be all that's wrong, and that's a much better outcome than having to buy a new motor.
- Get a diagnosis before buying parts. Have your mechanic check the motor and controller and see whether the repair is covered under warranty.
