Performance, Comfort, And Ride Feel
The Domane+ e-road bike, although heavily marketed as a road endurance bike for longer distances, can perform well. It’s incredibly light for an electric bike and aerodynamic. It’s actually very quick up to max speed, and the climbs do feel effortless. The extra low-down weight gives me some extra confidence on descents, alongside sharp-stopping hydraulic disc brakes.
The comfort on this bike is the best thing about it. It’s lovely to ride. It's like the designer just said, "Here’s how I want the user to sit, and let's work the bike completely around that." You might think this is standard practice in bike design, but it’s not. Sometimes aerodynamics and weight saving are the main focus.
This combination of performance and comfort gives an excellent ride feel, and for me, I love it. It feels fast but without that back-breaking bent-forward position that, as road cyclists, we have somehow convinced ourselves is normal. It’s worth noting that, with that 40mm tire clearance, the right tires make it a gravel/adventure bike as well.
TQ Motor And Battery
The TQ motor the Trek uses on the Domane+ is quite unique. On most Treks and lots of other brands, you will find Bosch motors. The TQ is a very lightweight motor-and-battery setup and is better suited to road bikes than mountain bikes. It produces 60Nm of torque and comes with a 360Wh battery. They state it offers around 40-80 miles of range (Let’s take that with a pinch of salt) and, with the 160Wh range extender, even more.
Compared to other e-Bike systems, it might sound tame, but it’s not designed to be punchy or feel like a moped. It’s designed to make you feel like you have stronger legs. It’s a nice feeling, and when you get up to max speed, it doesn’t just drag. It maintains a nice flow, unlike many bikes.
