Why Shouldn't I Charge After Each Ride? 

Charging your bike after every ride keeps it in a constant state of fully charged. A fully charged battery means stressed cells. It causes a lot of chemical stress within the battery to spend that much time at the extremely high end of voltage. Time spent at the extremes of fully charged and dead degrades the battery just as much as usage. Keeping your battery charged and topping it off regularly will keep it in a constant state of stress and lower its lifespan. 


The last 10 to 20% of the charging process is the least efficient and most stressful for the battery. As long as you don’t charge to 100% and drain to 0% each time, you are still avoiding the extremes more often than not. 


  • Long Trips: This is the obvious one. If you plan on going on a long ride, you might need a full charge. This is especially true for multi-day bikepacking trips where you might be going into uncharted territory. The last thing you want is to be lost with no phone signal and a dead e-Bike battery. Always make sure you have enough of a charge to sustain the watt-hours you need for your planned trip. 

  • Cell balancing: Cell balancing is a way to calibrate your battery management system. It is a good idea to do this before your first few rides with a new battery, when a battery has been in storage for a long time, or if you notice a sudden decline in range. To balance your battery, charge it to 100%, then leave it plugged in for an additional 2 to 4 hours after the indicator light turns green. This is healthy to do about every 30-50 charging cycles. 

  • Calibration: A new battery needs to be calibrated, so it is important to fully charge it and then fully discharge it. This results in a full charge cycle, which will be noted by your e-Bike’s firmware.
