Shimano STEPS Battery LED Codes Explained

Written by: Nick Cowie| November 2, 2026 | Time to read 5 min

With five LEDs included on the battery, your Shimano STEPS system uses its lights both to indicate battery capacity and to communicate errors. Learn what each light, color, and pattern mean, so you can stay up to date with your e-Bike’s status.

Shimano STEPS motors and batteries are some of the most popular, powerful, and reliable drive unit options on the electric bike market. The battery comes with five LED indicators. These lights tell you the general capacity of the battery, but they can also change patterns and colors to indicate an issue with the motor or system. If you learn what these error codes mean, you will have an easier time diagnosing and fixing a problem with your Shimano STEPS system.

Capacity and Charging

Even when there is no problem to be found, you can use the lights on your Shimano STEPS battery to see how it is doing. Check the capacity of the battery as well as its status during the charging process.

  • Static Scale: The five LED lights serve as a scale to indicate power levels within the battery. Each green or blue light represents 20% of the battery’s overall capacity. This is indicated by a static illuminated light. All five lights mean the battery is at or around 100%.

  • Progressive Blinking: This is another one of the positive indicators on the list. If the LED of the corresponding charging tier is blinking while connected to the charger, this means that it is in the process of charging.

  • Single-LED Alternatives: Some Shimano battery packs only have a single LED. To indicate the capacity of these packs, the LED will flash in a repeating sequence where each flash indicates 20% of the charge.

Fault Codes and System Diagnosis

Indicating power capacity and charging status are not the only jobs of the LEDs on a Shimano STEPS battery. They also let you know if anything is wrong. Each one of these flashing patterns tells a different story of an issue that needs to be solved with your drive system.

  • All 5 Flashing: If all five of the LED lights are flashing together, that means that overcurrent protection has been triggered. This is how the system prevents overcharging, overheating, or any dangers to the charging process. Unplug the charger or reseat the frame mount connection to try again.

  • Outer and Inner LEDs Alternating Flashing: This flashing pattern indicates a system temperature out-of-range fault. This happens if the temperature of a cell falls below 32 degrees or rises above 104 degrees during operation. Let the system cool down or bring it to a temperature-regulated area to revert back to normal before turning it back on.

  • LED 1 and 2 Flashing Together: If the first two LEDs on the battery are flashing in unison, this means that there is a drive unit communication or recognition failure. If the battery cannot verify the connected Shimano motor profile through its wiring harness, this error will occur.

Single LED Indicators

Sometimes your Shimano STEPS battery will only have one LED light to work with. These minimalist systems still communicate. This is most common on integrated downtube setups or modern minimalist systems. They use a single multi-colored light to make sure that all error codes can be covered.

  • 4-Flash Loop: When the light flashes four times, then repeats, it is telling you that there is a general charging phase error happening, so power cannot safely enter the cell. This requires you to disconnect the charger and cycle the main system power button.

  • 5-Flash Loop: When five flashes are present in the loop, it means that there is an internal electrical abnormality or structural hardware failure in the system. The Battery Management System is logging the information and indicating it to you through the flash pattern.

  • Solid Red or Slow Pulse: This tells the rider that there is an active system failure or that there is a deeply depleted cell block. When this happens, motor engagement will be blocked until the battery pack recognizes an authorized power supply to replenish the battery cell.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does each LED mean when charging?

When charging a Shimano STEPS battery, each LED light indicates 20% of the charge. The section that is actively being charged will blink, so you know what stage of the process you are on.

Why do some Shimano batteries only have one light?

A lot of modern minimalist batteries and integrated downtube batteries use a single light instead of the five-LED system. There are still error codes and proper communication; it is just a different language.

What do I do if my battery overheats?

If a cell overheats, the BMS should catch it, cease charging, and indicate this to you with the LEDs. When this happens, wait for the temperature to regulate before attempting to charge or ride.

Key Takeaways

  1. Shimano’s LEDs are for charging and errors: The LED system found on a Shimano STEPS battery can tell you about the charging status of the system and what might be wrong with it based on what the lights are doing.
  2. The BMS is responsible for battery protection: The Battery Management System is the brain of the battery cell. This system will shut down the battery if it detects dangerous conditions that could harm the drive unit.
  3. Upway sells safe batteries and chargers: Upway specializes in refurbishing e-Bikes, but our bike experts also find safe and reliable Shimano batteries and chargers to sell at a great price.
