Giant Defy Advanced E+ Elite Review: Lightweight E-Road Bike

One of the biggest mistakes manufacturers make with electric road bikes is trying too hard to remind you they’re electric. Bigger motors. Bigger batteries. More power. That approach works for some riders, but it often comes at the expense of the lively handling and responsive feel people expect from a performance road bike. Giant took a different approach.

The Defy Advanced E+ Elite shares the same endurance-road philosophy as the standard Defy. It still feels ready to accelerate, predictable through fast corners, and comfortable enough for long days in the saddle. Giant’s D-Fuse seatpost and D-Fuse handlebars soften rough pavement, while clearance for tires up to 38mm lets you confidently venture onto weathered backroads and occasional gravel stretches.

The pedal assist follows the same philosophy. Instead of surging forward every time you touch the pedals, support builds gradually and fades away just as smoothly when you ease off. The result is an electric endurance road bike that never feels like it’s trying to take over the ride. I think that’s why this bike works.

Most experienced road cyclists aren’t trying to replace the experience of riding. They’re trying to extend it. Maybe that’s finishing a century with more energy, hanging onto the group a little longer on climbs, or simply adding another hour before heading home. That’s exactly where the Defy Advanced E+ Elite shines.

The biggest difference between the Defy Advanced E+ Elite and many competing electric road bikes isn’t the battery. It’s Giant’s decision to use the 1.7kg (3 lb 12 oz) SyncDrive Move Plus rear hub motor instead of a traditional mid-drive. That changes how the bike feels once you’re on the road.

Many mid-drive systems deliver impressive climbing power, but they can also make themselves known once assistance stops. Because Giant’s motor rotates with the rear wheel instead of driving through the crankset, the Defy continues to pedal naturally when you’re above the assist limit or coasting downhill. That’s something experienced road riders tend to notice almost immediately.

Giant also tuned the software around the way road cyclists actually ride. Support increases smoothly as your effort builds and eases away naturally when you stop pedaling, creating transitions that rarely interrupt your rhythm. Smart Assist adds an additional layer by measuring pedal input and automatically adjusting support, rather than requiring you to constantly switch between assist modes.

If you prefer more control, the RideControl App lets you fine-tune support levels, while the integrated RideControl Go button keeps the cockpit clean. Higher-end models equipped with SRAM AXS controls even let you change assist modes from the handlebars.

Those features are very useful, but what stands out most is how quickly you stop thinking about them. I keep coming back to one rider: someone who likes hanging with the group for 40 or 50 miles but slowly loses contact once the climbing starts. They’re still fit. They still love riding. They’d just appreciate a little help when the road continually goes uphill.

I think Giant had that rider in mind. The Defy doesn’t flatten the climb or turn every ride into an easy spin. It simply helps you stay in the ride longer.

Some brands compete by squeezing the biggest battery they can into the frame. Giant chose balance instead.

The integrated EnergyPak 400Wh battery keeps the bike slim and well-balanced, while the optional EnergyPak 200Wh Range Extender increases the total capacity to 600Wh for riders planning longer days in the saddle. Giant estimates a maximum range of up to 150 km (about 93 miles) under favorable conditions.

Like every e-Bike, real-world range depends on terrain, rider weight, weather, assist mode, and how hard you pedal. The more interesting point is how the system uses that battery. Rather than relying on a massive power pack, Giant focused on delivering assistance efficiently. For the rider this bike targets, I think that’s the smarter compromise.

I think Giant built this bike for a fairly specific rider. This isn’t the e-road bike I’d recommend to someone chasing the biggest motor or the highest torque numbers. If your priority is maximum climbing assistance or riding steep dirt roads, a full-power mid-drive system is probably a better fit. The Defy Advanced E+ Elite is for road cyclists who still enjoy putting in the work.

I’d consider it if you:

• Want to ride farther without feeling completely spent at the end of the day.
• Regularly battle rolling terrain or strong headwinds.
• Enjoy century rides but wouldn’t mind taking some sting out of the final miles.
• Want a carbon endurance e-road bike that’s comfortable on rough pavement without sacrificing responsive handling.
• Prefer subtle pedal assist over overwhelming motor power.
  
  

I also think it’ll appeal to experienced cyclists whose goals have shifted over the years. Maybe you still love long climbs, but your recovery isn’t quite what it used to be. Maybe you’re riding for the experience now instead of chasing personal records every weekend.

The assistance doesn’t replace the effort. It simply stretches the amount of riding you can enjoy before fatigue sets in.

A used Giant Defy Advanced E+ Elite can be an excellent value, especially considering what premium carbon e-road bikes cost new. Before buying, I’d verify the exact model because Giant offers several builds with different drivetrains and wheelsets.

I’d also inspect:

• Battery condition and charging performance.
• Smooth, quiet motor engagement.
• RideControl Go controls and RideControl App connectivity.
• Carbon frame and fork for cracks, chips, or crash damage.
• Drivetrain, wheels, brakes, and tire wear.

That won’t appeal to everyone. Riders looking for maximum power or the biggest battery will probably find better options elsewhere. But if your goal is to keep the familiar feel of a performance endurance road bike while taking some of the sting out of long days, steep climbs, and constant headwinds, I think Giant has built one of the better electric road bikes in this category.
