E-Bike range for long-distance riders

E-Bike range is a big selling point, but it can also be a bit of misleading marketing magic. High-mileage and long-distance riders look for electric bikes that will have enough juice for all their adventures. Some brands include range estimates while other brands omit it because they recognize range depends on tons of factors beyond battery size, like rider weight, terrain, and assist level.

But there are a few things you can look for to ensure you’re getting an e-Bike with a great battery and solid range. Prioritize e-Bikes from the top brands because they use safe and efficient batteries that will last for thousands of charge cycles. Companies like Giant have the resources to design reliable batteries (Giant partners with Panasonic) and provide tons of information about the technology inside. Be wary of cheaper e-Bike companies that provide few details on their batteries.

What is the EnergyPak battery system?

EnergyPak is the name Giant gives to its e-Bike batteries. The power packs are designed in collaboration with Panasonic and there are a few different models and sizes depending on the bike, ranging from 400Wh to 800Wh. All Giant batteries have an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) to increase the lifespan and charging efficiency.

For riders needing even more juice from their long range e-Bike, Giant makes the EnergyPak Plus range extender. This additional battery pack mounts externally to the frame and tacks on an extra 250Wh. It automatically turns on when your principal battery loses power, but can only be fitted onto certain Giant e=Bike models.

The range of Giant e-Bikes varies because of battery size and ride factors like rider weight, terrain, and assist level. But Giant still touts some huge numbers like 100+ mile range on some of their Momentum electric bikes! Lightweight models like a road e-Bike from Giant also travel far on a single charge.

Safe, long-lasting performance

Long range on a single charge isn’t the only measure of battery quality— Giant e-Bike batteries are incredibly safe and last for thousands of charge cycles. Giant explains that its batteries come with over-charge protection as well as water and impact protection. The battery is rated to last 2,300 full charge cycles— that corresponds to years and years of riding and thousands of miles.

EnergyPak battery chargers

Chargers are often an underrated part of an e-Bike, but Giant turns them into a huge advantage. The brand’s two chargers are both incredibly fast— the BMS technology works its magic so there’s no need to worry about over-charging or reduced battery life.

What is an electric bike charger? Many e-Bike out there come with slower 2-amp or 3-amp chargers that take a long time to juice up the bike. Giant, however, uses more powerful 4-amp and 6-amp chargers to shorten the charging time.

Smart charger

Giant’s most powerful 6-amp charger fuels a battery to 80% in just two hours and 100% in just four. And when the battery surpasses 500 charge cycles the charger lowers the voltage to extend the battery lifespan (though this does slow down charging). Users can switch between full charge and 60% storage mode with the press of a button— another key part of long-term battery maintenance.

Fast charger

Giant’s fast charger is rated at 4 amps and is smaller and more lightweight, meaning it's easier to carry to the office or take with you. The fast charger lets you charge the EnergyPak on or off the electric bike.
