Bluejay Premiere electric bike
Bluejay electric bikes sit at the intersection of fashion, function, and family-friendly design. With vintage-inspired cruisers, a modern all-terrain model, and one of the few purpose-built kids’ electric bikes on the market, Bluejay keeps its lineup small and intentional. In this guide, we’ll break down what makes Bluejay e-Bikes unique, who they’re best for, and how to score one for less through Upway’s expertly inspected, pre-owned electric bikes.

👋  Welcome to Upway!

What are Bluejay electric bikes?

Bluejay is a small electric bike brand with a focus on good-looking models for everyday riding. Bluejay has a limited fleet of e-Bikes, including a vintage-inspired step-through cruiser, a sportier all-terrain e-Bike, and a kid-specific electric bike.

Founder Jen Cohen Bogan came from a fashion and beauty background to make electric bikes with better style, ready for active lifestyles. Bluejay e-Bikes are more chic than your average pedal-assist bike with frame color options, streamlined designs, and integrated batteries. The electric bikes are manufactured in Taiwan, as is the case with many other brands, and Bluejay has its flagship showroom in Newport Beach, CA.

Why ride Bluejay e-Bikes?

Bluejay Premiere electric bike frame

Many riders are drawn to Bluejay electric bikes because of their stylish looks, with solid performance backed up by dependable components. Bluejay e-Bikes are a great choice for cyclists who want an electric bike with an elevated design, including white tires, front baskets, unique colors, and slim frames. After all, we all like to stand out from the crowd, don’t we?

From cool chic to vintage-inspired aesthetics, Bluejay electric bikes catch the eye decently well. There are also name-brand, quality parts. All models have Shimano gearing, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, and a Bafang motor (rear hub drive or mid-drive).

To me, the retail price for these bikes does seem relatively steep, considering the chosen components. New electric bikes cost between $3,000 and $4,000— that’s similar to popular bikes from the likes of Trek, Specialized, or Gazelle— but don’t have as premium of drive units. But luckily for you, Upway offers unbeatable deals on pre-owned Bluejay electric bikes, including a full inspection and 1-year warranty on all models.

It’s a retro-styled cruiser that’s fully loaded with convenient features and quality parts, including both a front basket and rear rack. The Premier is powered by a Bafang M400 250W mid-drive motor with 80 Nm of torque. As a Class 1 e-Bike, it assists up to 20 mph. Unlike Bluejay’s newer models, the 556 Wh battery is externally mounted to the frame. Bluejay Premiere Lite

The Premier Lite model is a more approachable version of the Bluejay’s flagship model, swapping out a mid-drive motor with a Bafang rear hub drive. It’s still a vintage-inspired step-through cruiser and assists to Class 1 speeds. There are reliable, quality components like the Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, too. It’s relatively lightweight at only 50 pounds and rolls on Schwalbe 700c x 50mm tires. This model is a bit sleeker with an integrated removable battery and optional rear and front racks to carry cargo. Slimmer, rear drive-powered, but with all the same style!

Bluejay WILD

The Bluejay WILD bucks vintage design cues for a more modern, all-terrain build. It’s somewhere between an electric hardtail mountain bike and a tamer hybrid e-Bike, equipped with off-road tires and a suspension fork with 100mm of travel. There’s a Class 1 250W rear hub motor, Shimano Deore 10-speed gearing, and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. It’s light on its wheels at just 47 pounds and rolls on 27.5 x 2.35” mountain bike tires. For multi-surface riding and the light trail adventure, go wild on this Bluejay electric bike.

Bluejay WILD Kids

The Bluejay WILD Kids is an electric bike designed specifically for young riders between the ages of 8 and 12+ years old. There are smaller wheels and a lower maximum speed that better suit developing riders to keep them safe. The Small size fits riders from 4’2 to 5’ and has 24” tires, topping out at 12 mph of assistance. The Medium version fits kids from 4’6” to 5’4” and has larger 27.5” tires, assisting up to 15 mph.

The Bluejay WILD Kids is powered by a 250W rear hub motor and 360 Wh battery. There’s a Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, and a suspension for with 100mm of travel. The mid-step frame swoops down for more top tube clearance that’s a bit safer. This electric bike is “mom-designed” and actually makes sense for kids with its reined-in speed specs that encourages safer, more controlled riding— that is, if you do really want kids to ride an electric bike rather than a standard bicycle, but that’s a conversation for another day.

Bluejay Sport

On its way out of the Bluejay fleet, the Sport model is a versatile electric bike with fast specs and fully-loaded features. It’s a Class 3 e-Bike that speeds up to 28 mph thanks to the Bafang M600 500W mid-drive motor with 100 Nm of torque. The 620 Wh battery mounts externally to the frame, and the rugged build is ready for gravel, dirt, or hilly city streets. There’s a front and rear rack to load up and truly turn this multi-purpose e-Bike into a SUV on two wheels. It rolls on 29" x 2.1" tires with a heavier tread and relies on a Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. If you like Surly or Salsa bikes, this capable model should be right up your alley.
