What are Azor bikes?

If you’re Dutch, you’ve probably already ridden an Azor bike or at least seen tons of them. By now, Azor has become synonymous with high-quality, custom-made bicycles and e-Bikes in the Netherlands. Each bike is made-to-order, and the company manufactures a wide range of models, including classic Dutch-style cruisers, commuter e-Bikes, and heavy-duty electric cargo bikes

What sets Azor bikes apart is its impeccable manufacturing process and commitment to quality and durability, making bikes that are truly built to last. The Dutch use their electric bikes a lot— including through rainy, windy weather and cobbled surfaces— so Azor bikes can really take a beating and keep on rolling.

Beyond Azor’s large fleet of acoustic and electric bikes, it runs Bakfiets.nl, the hugely popular cargo bike company. Azor has been around for a few decades and continues to produce its bikes locally and sustainably in Hogeveen, the Netherlands, though there’s a global reach for these premium two-wheelers. Azor bikes are most popular in the Dutch, German, and French markets, while Bakfiets.nl sells high numbers across Germany, France, the UK, and Scandinavia— exports are also strong in the US and Canada.

Why buy Azor e-Bikes?

  • Built uniquely for you: Every Azor is custom-configured, giving you a bike tailored to your needs rather than a one-size-fits-all model.
  • Engineered for longevity: Azor maximizes the use of stainless steel—spokes, cables, and numerous small components—to dramatically reduce wear, breakage, and rust.
  • Hand-assembled in the Netherlands: Each bike is meticulously crafted by skilled craftsmen in Hoogeveen, ensuring an exceptional fit and finish.
  • Exceptionally strong, not heavy: Reinforced rims and oversized tubing provide outstanding durability and stability without adding unnecessary weight.

How are Azor e-Bike models named?

Azor pays attention to the details, and that attitude is reflected in the complex yet informative model names of its fleet. Here’s how to make sense of the Azor bike names when you’re browsing or come across a used e-Bike you like:

  • Model name: You may want to speak some Dutch to pronounce the many model names in Azor’s extensive lineup of electric bikes. Each model has a different design, though they are all roughly a kind of hybrid e-Bike.

  • Frame geometry: Azor stays old-school with the frame geometry names, referring to high-step frames as “Men’s” and step-through frames as “Women's” on certain models. There is a range of standard, mid-step, and low-step frame options throughout the fleet.

  • Frame material: Most Azor e-Bikes are made from a durable steel, though some have aluminum frame options, such as the Carolina AluOma and AluTransport.

  • Bike package: There are additional indicators, such as “Heavy-duty” (extra-strong frame) and “Luxe” (white-wall tires), that specify the exact design and components of the bike that differ from the standard version.

All Azor e-Bikes are made-to-order, so you can get exactly what you want. This means you can choose the paint color, drivetrain options, and frame size of your bike! Most models have a Shimano EP6 mid-drive motor, yet several options for the internally geared belt drive.

Azor E-Bike Models

Azor Zandvoort

The Azor Zandvoort is a comfortable hybrid e-Bike, available in both Men’s and Women’s frame geometries. The Men’s frame option actually doesn’t have a seatstay, making for a very unique frame aesthetic and open parallelogram shape rather than the classic triangle. The step-through model has a low, swooping frame for easy riding. The Zandvoort is powered by a Shimano EP6 Cargo 85 Nm mid-drive motor, with a belt drive, rear rack, wheel lock, and integrated front rack.

Azor Kijkduin

The Azor Kijkduin model reminds me of vintage Schwinns, if they were transformed into a Dutch electric bike with the latest parts. The upright frame and swept-back handlebars mean it’s a super-comfy ride, perhaps more similar to a cruiser bike than a city bike. The Kijkduin is powered by a Shimano EP5 mid-drive motor with 60 Nm of torque, with a low-maintenance belt-drive.

Azor Schoorl

The Azor Schoorl is very similar to the Zandvoort model, but forgoes the study front rack and features a Shimano EP5 mid-drive motor instead. The unique frame design is still there on the Men’s model, and it makes for an excellent commuter e-Bike or recreational ride all around town.

Azor Carolina

The Carolina is one of Azor’s most popular models and comes in a variety of flavors. Each model receives a boost from a premium Shimano STEPS mid-drive motor, and there is a rear wheel cover, front rack, swept-back handlebars, belt-drive, and battery atop the rear rack.

  • Oma: Laid-back cruiser style
  • Transport: Step-over, more sporty design
  • Abdij: Mid-step cruiser frame
  • Kruis: Innovative frame with crossed tubing

Azor Elburg

The Azor Elburg is a low-riding hybrid e-Bike with a step-through frame and relaxed riding position for ultimate comfort and convenience. The low frame is easy to get on and off, and the smaller 24” wheels also keep things lower to the ground, ideal for older or smaller riders. It’s powered by a Shimano EP5 mid-drive motor, with an externally mounted 504 Wh battery, integrated lights, and a reliable belt-drive.

Azor Flevoland

The Flevoland model is a practical and versatile hybrid electric bike, available in step-over and step-through geometry. The battery is placed on top of the rear rack, making the rest of the frame look just as sleek as a traditional bike. There’s a powerful Shimano STEPS mid-drive motor, a reliable belt-drive, and an upright riding position for confident handling. Perhaps my favorite model within the Azor fleet— simple, elegant, no-nonsense commuter that’s ready to handle tons of miles. Simply put, very Dutch.

Azor Kruis

Kruis means “cross”, and this model features a super unique— and honestly very cool— criss-crossed frame design. There’s an extra tube that extends from the rear axle all the way to the bottom of the headset, crossing the seat tube and top tube. This model has a rear rack where the battery sits, a belt drive, a dual center kickstand, and a heavy-duty front rack.

Azor Oma

Named after the word for “Grandma”, the Azor Oma is perhaps the most classically Dutch model in the lineup. The old-school swooping frame, relaxed position, and functional accessories like racks and fenders are what cyclists have been depending on for more than 100 years— so don’t mess with something that’s not broken. But, of course, this electrified model isn’t just for grandmas. There’s even a Luxe version with elegant white-wall tires for an extra touch of flair.

Azor Abdij/Texel

The Azor Abdij is the brand’s dedicated mid-step electric bike, and an excellent all-rounder in my eyes. The open frame is convenient and comfortable, and it’s tricked out with Azor’s hallmark belt-drive options, rear and front racks, a large rear battery, and a reliable mid-drive motor. Sit back and enjoy the ride or feel a little sportier— the Abdij strikes the right balance.
