What are Babboe electric bikes?

Babboe is a bicycle brand from the Netherlands that makes  front-loading cargo bikes, also called Dutch bakfiets or “box bikes”. It produced its first model in 2007 with the Babboe Big three-wheel cargo bike and launched its first electric bike, the Babboe Big with pedal assistance, in 2009. Babboe makes two-wheel and three-wheel cargo bicycles and e-Bikes. In 2024, however, Babboe initiated a global recall of its bicycles because of weakness in the frames that posed a risk to riders. Babboe has halted all sales.

All Babboe e-Bikes have been recalled

Babboe is no longer selling cargo bikes and has issued a recall on all of its models. The recall was issued both in Europe and in the US. The CPSC described in its announcement that the frames of the recalled cargo bicycles can crack, bend, or break, posing a fall hazard to the rider. Specifically, heavy or prolonged use can result in fine cracks developing in the affected frames. Over time, these cracks may cause the frame to deform or sag, creating a potential safety hazard.

The problem is very serious, though the scale is limited in the US market— from January 2011 through March 2024, around 300 units were sold in the US. Additionally, one investigation actually revealed that Babboe’s management intentionally concealed the true number of defective bicycles that were sent back to the factory for replacement, and Babboe is facing potential prosecution for selling defective cargo bikes. Quite shocking, indeed.

If you still have a Babboe cargo bike, you can contact Babboe toll-free at 833-220-7867 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, email at service.us@babboe.com, or online at www.internationalcargobike.com for more information.

If your bike has been recalled, here’s what to do next:

  • Stop riding it: Discontinue riding the bike immediately to avoid any safety risks.
  • Reach out to Babboe: Contact their customer support to arrange either a full refund or a replacement model.
  • Verify your bike: Locate the frame number on the seat tube or bottom bracket and enter it on Babboe’s website to confirm whether your bike is affected by the recall.
