Cargoe-Bikes can solve a lot of transportation problems, but they can create another one: where do you put the bike when you’re not riding it? The Yuba FastRack has the answer. It’s a compact cargo e-Bike with 20-inch wheels, room for one adult or two children, and a 440-pound maximum load. Its Dual Rack System switches between passenger and cargo setups, and you can stand the bike vertically when it’s time to put it away.

In this blog, I’ll look at the Dual Rack System, Shimano STEPS E7000 motor, and 500Wh battery, plus where the FastRack makes sense and where it doesn’t.

One thing to watch if you’re shopping used or certified pre-owned on Upway: the FastRack V1 is an earlier version of the bike, and its components and specs can differ from the current FastRack. Check the model year and the individual bike before you buy.

The Dual Rack System is What Makes the FastRack Different

Lots of cargo bikes can carry kids one day and groceries the next, but the question is how much work it takes to switch between the two. Yuba’s response is the Dual Rack System, or DRS. Instead of a fixed rear rack, the system has four positions: Sideboard, Carry-On, Flat Bed, and Compact.

The four positions give you a few different ways to use the rack. Sideboard works for passengers, while Carry-On adds sides to help contain your cargo. Flat Bed gives you more room for bulky loads, and Compact folds the rack in when you don’t need the extra space. Better yet, you can switch between all four without tools.

That’s probably the best reason to look at the FastRack. A school run, commute, and trip to the grocery store don’t necessarily require the same setup. Instead of being stuck with one cargo setup, you can change the rack as you go.

Yuba also offers accessories including the FastRack Deck, Monkey Bars, Mini Soft Spots, Grab & Go pannier, DRS Bag, and Bread Basket. Those will add to the price, particularly if you’re setting the bike up for children, but the DRS itself is already part of the bike.

Shimano E7000 Mid-Drive Motor

The FastRack uses a Shimano STEPS E7000 mid-drive motor paired with a 500Wh battery, and the motor produces up to 60Nm of torque and provides pedal assistance to 20 mph. A 500Wh battery isn’t especially large by current cargo e-Bike standards, but because the E7000 is a mid-drive motor, it sends power through the drivetrain and can use the bike’s gearing. That helps when starting with a load or climbing a hill.

Yuba doesn’t list a specific range for the FastRack, and range will depend heavily on how you use it. Add two kids, steeper hills, stop-and-go riding, or more time in the higher assist modes, and the 500Wh battery will drain faster.

The Shimano 10-speed drivetrain uses an 11-36T cassette, while Magura hydraulic disc brakes handle stopping. Depending on the model year, you may also see FastRack specs referring to Shimano Deore components, which is another reason to check the individual bike if you’re buying used.

The E7000 isn’t the biggest motor you’ll find on a cargo e-Bike, and 500Wh isn’t the biggest battery. But with a mid-drive motor and 10-speed drivetrain, you have gearing to work with when the bike is loaded.

The Yuba FastRack Carries a Lot, While Saving Space

The FastRack’s 20-inch wheels keep the frame and cargo lower to the ground, and that helps when you’re stopped with a child on the back or loading groceries. The bike uses wide Schwalbe 20 x 2.4-inch tires, and depending on the version, you may see them listed as Schwalbe Super Moto tires. Yuba rates the bike for a 440-pound maximum load, all in a bike measuring about 6 feet 2 inches long.

Then there’s storage. The FastRack can be stored vertically, taking up less than 10.8 square feet of floor space. For an apartment or a crowded garage, that makes a real difference.

There’s a catch, though. The FastRack weighs 76 pounds. You don’t have to lift the entire bike off the ground to stand it vertically, but you’re still handling a heavy cargo e-Bike. If your storage spot involves stairs, vertical storage won’t solve that problem.

What Are the FastRack’s Tradeoffs?

Weight is the obvious one. At 76 pounds before accessories or cargo, this isn’t a bike you’ll want to carry regularly. The 500Wh battery is another consideration if you expect to cover long distances with heavy loads. And pedal assist also stops at 20 mph. That may be plenty when you’re carrying kids, but riders who want a Class 3 e-bike with assistance to 28 mph will need a different bike. Passenger accessories also cost extra. The FastRack can carry passengers, but the FastRack Deck, Monkey Bars, seating, and other add-ons can raise the final price.

Who Is the Yuba FastRack For?

The FastRack makes the most sense for someone who will actually use the cargo capacity but doesn’t want one of the biggest cargo bikes on the road. Parents are an obvious fit, as are riders replacing short car trips with grocery runs, errands, or commutes that require more than a backpack. If you need one bike for passengers, groceries, and everyday errands, the adjustable rack and vertical storage are what make the FastRack stand out.

The FastRack isn’t inexpensive when purchased new, especially once you add passenger and cargo accessories. Buying a certified pre-owned e-Bike on Upway will bring that price down, but make sure you know exactly which FastRack you’re buying. Yuba has sold different versions, including the FastRack V1, and components can vary by model year.

A used cargo e-Bike has more to check than a basic commuter: the motor and battery, plus the brakes, drivetrain, rack system, and hardware used to carry the load. That’s why Upway’s certified pre-owned e-Bikes go through a 50-point inspection covering their mechanical and electrical systems. They also come with a one-year warranty and a 14-day return period and 1-year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can the Yuba FastRack carry?

Yuba lists a 440-pound maximum weight for the FastRack. That includes the bike, rider, passengers, and cargo, so it’s not the same as a 440-pound carrying capacity.

Can the Yuba FastRack carry children?

Yes. The FastRack can carry up to two children or one adult passenger. Accessories such as the FastRack Deck, Monkey Bars, and seating may be required depending on how you configure the bike.

Can you store the Yuba FastRack vertically?

Yes. The FastRack is designed for vertical storage, which can save a lot of floor space. Just remember that it still weighs 76 pounds.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Dual Rack System is the main reason to look at the FastRack. It switches between Sideboard, Carry-On, Flat Bed, and Compact modes without tools.
  2. It packs a lot of cargo capacity into a relatively compact bike. You get 20-inch wheels, a 440-pound maximum load, passenger capability, and vertical storage.
  3. Weight, range, and speed are the trade-offs. The FastRack weighs 76 pounds, uses a 500Wh battery, and provides Class 1 assistance up to 20 mph.
