Unless you’ve been living under a giant rock for the past few decades, you probably know about Giant Bicycles, recognized as the world’s largest bike brand and manufacturer. Giant’s bikes are everywhere from your local paths to the pro peloton, including an extensive lineup of electric bikes. In this article, I’ll explain the reasons behind the colossus’ success and its excellent e-Bikes.

👋  Welcome to Upway!

Why buy a Giant bike?

Giant is one of Upway’s best-selling brands for a reason, known for making high-quality bikes with outstanding value. The big brand has always been headquartered in Taiwan— the global center of bicycle manufacturing where so many other brands build their frames and bikes.

The special thing about Giant, though, is that it does nearly everything in-house. Giant owns and runs its own factories and aluminum foundry and doesn’t outsource frame-building to other companies. By cutting out the middleman, Giant can sell bikes at a better price and oversee quality control during the whole manufacturing process.

Giant’s impressive fleet

Another important selling point is the vastness of Giant’s family of bikes. Unlike some brands that have just one of two models per riding discipline, Giant has several to choose from so you can afford to be super picky across mountain bikes, road e-Bike, hybrid models, and so much more. Plenty of options means there’s definitely a Giant bike out there to match your budget, too.

And Giant bikes may have an even farther reach than you think. Giant sponsors professional racing teams (we’re talking Tour de France level here) and collaborates with athletes to continue pushing the limits of its performance bikes. For female cyclists, Giant’s sister brand, Liv, has been making women-specific bikes and e-Bikes since 2008. The Momentum brand is also part of the Giant family, focusing on lifestyle and city bikes.

Giant doesn’t skimp on e-Bike options

Sometimes hunting for an e-Bike means you’ll have to settle for less variety. And that makes sense— established brands already have a sizable catalog of standard bikes and will gradually add e-Bikes little by little (good R&D takes time, after all). And newer e-Bike-only brands often just make one model per riding style.

But Giant bucks this trend with its colossal fleet of electric bikes! Seriously, the amount of different e-Bike models across the Giant, Liv, and Momentum brands is huge and dwarfs many rival bike makers. Giant has gone all in for e-Bikes and riders love such diversity and a wide range of options to pick out the perfect Giant e-Bike.

What makes a Giant electric bike so good

What is an electric bike from Giant actually like? Here’s a deeper dive into the technology that powered Giant electric bikes and what makes them different from other boosted bikes around.

SyncDrive motors

Giant has developed its own line of motors with what it calls SyncDrive technology. Many of these motors are powered by Yamaha and there’s one from Shimano, each created in collaboration with Giant. SyncDrive is a mid-drive motor system that’s tuned for a natural feel and quiet performance.

There’s even a split second of lower torque in the pedal revolution that replicates a human pedal stroke with a “dead point” of slightly less power— cool, right? These high-end motors are right up there with Bosch, Brose, and Shimano mid-drive motors in terms of quality. There are several types of SyncDrive motors depending on the type of e-Bike and spec package you’re looking at.

Smart Assist

Giant’s Smart Assist uses sensors and advanced algorithms to produce the most natural and smooth pedal assist. Six sensors measure the pedaling cadence, rider torque, and surface slope to determine the optimum amount of power the rider needs at that moment. Some fancy calculations and intelligent algorithms help the pedal-assist stay as efficient as possible to increase your range, too.

EnergyPak battery

Giant calls its e-Bike batteries “EnergyPaks”. They are high-quality batteries and are neatly integrated into most of Giant’s e-Bikes, although you may notice the downtubes on Giant models are slightly beefier compared to e-Bikes from other brands— not a dealbreaker in my book, but that’s up to you.

Giant also makes the EnergyPak Plus range extenders that can boost total capacity by 250Wh. It’s compatible with certain Giant models and automatically turns on when your main battery runs out of juice, transforming your bike into a super long range e-Bike!

Key Takeaways

  1. Industry-Leading Manufacturing & Value: Giant controls its entire production process, from frame-building to assembly, ensuring high-quality bikes at competitive prices without relying on third-party manufacturers.
  2. Extensive e-Bike Lineup: Unlike many brands with limited electric bike options, Giant offers a vast range of e-Bikes across its Giant, Liv, and Momentum brands.
  3. Advanced e-Bike Technology: Giant’s SyncDrive motors, Smart Assist system, and EnergyPak batteries provide smooth, efficient, and natural pedal assistance, with options for extended range and performance tuning.
