Ritchey’s history
Tom Ritchey gained notoriety in the late 70’s as the first person to create and mass-produce a specialized mountain bike. He got his start welding his own bike frames in his parents’ garage, then later collaborated with other cyclists to mass-produce off-road bikes. In 1984, he used his welding skills to found Ritchey Designs, making his own frames as well as performance components. Ritchey became known for his Logic Tubing design, which featured extra welding at the joints, but thinner tubing in the middle, leading to a lighter and thinner frame. He also pioneered lighter fork design, leading to the modern bike era.
Ritchey’s innovation landed him in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and United States Bicycle Hall of Fame. Designs include the integrated headtube, the first MTB bar/stem combo, 2x mountain bike drivetrains, and off-center rim technology. Today, Ritchey creates road bikes, gravel bikes, and mountain bikes. They do make performance carbon frames, but are better known for steel frames with the classically welded Logic Tubing.
