Orbea Gain Review: Endurance Road E-Bike

The Orbea Gain comes in a variety of versions. It spans both carbon and aluminum frames, and even has two different Mahle motor options. This allows riders to decide how much they want to spend and what kind of performance they want on the road. Look through the specs and see which version might be right for you. 

The bike engineering of the Orbea Gain brings versatility to the typical extra power of the electric bike. While the Gain is probably best classified as an endurance road bike, it is much more than that. It is light enough to dominate climbs, and rugged enough to toss on wider tires and tackle gravel rides. The Orbea Gain can do it all with an extra kick. 

• Frame: The frame of the Gain is lightweight and comfortable, giving buyers a choice between a carbon fiber frame and an aluminum alloy frame. The Gain M-Series uses OMR carbon, which is lightweight with excellent strength and compliance. The H-Series uses hydroformed aluminum alloy tubing for low weight at a lower price. Both versions utilize a carbon fork for responsive steering.  
  
  

• Geometry: The frame of the Orbea Gain is made to directly mirror that of the world-class Orca road bike. It features a narrow downtube and an invisible rear-hub motor, helping it maintain the same shape and feel as its non-electric counterpart. It has an endurance road geometry, meaning light gravel riding and long-mileage on the road is possible. 
  
  
• Accessories: The Gain features hidden mounting points for mud guards or fenders. This makes it a great option for all-weather riding and even commuting. The Orbea Gain also includes internal cable routing, which goes through the headset spacers and into the frame for a clean cockpit and maximum aerodynamics. 

The Orbea Gain is a Class 1 electric bike, meaning that the pedal assist cuts out after reaching 20 mph and there is no throttle. Class 1 e-Bikes are usually legal anywhere that normal bikes are, but be sure to check your local guidelines. This fits in well with Orbea’s desire to make a road bike first and e-Bike second. Despite the focus on the bike itself, the Gain is still packed with excellent tech. 

• Drive Unit: The Gain utilizes a Mahle Rear Hub Smart Drive. This allows the bike to maintain a narrow frame profile, nearly identical to that of the Orca and other standard road bikes. This is paired with narrow bottom bracket spacing to encourage natural pedaling alignment while maintaining the balance that you need when a motor is added. The battery is integrated seamlessly into the downtube to maintain the traditional bike profile.  
  
  

• Integration: All lighting is integrated into the frame and powered off of the battery. Integrated LED lights are built into the front of the computer display and the seatpost clamp to comply with light laws. AN iWoc ONE Top Tube Remote is found on the top tube. This is a minimalist button, replacing bulky screens. It cycles through settings and has an indicator light to show assistance levels and remaining battery life. 
  
  

• Smart Tech: Smart Assist is a setting that uses torque, cadence, and slope sensors to scale the output of the motor based on your power output, leaving you with the most natural ride feel possible. These levels can be customized in the Mahle My Smart Bike app. The motor is also programmed to slowly lower power as you hit the legal limit to avoid sudden stops. 

Road riders and all-road adventurers of all kinds will love the Orbea Gain. This isn’t your typical e-Bike where you just turn on the motor and go. It is made to feel like you are riding naturally, because for the most part, you are. The app allows you to set the motor’s assistance habits, and the motor automatically assists just enough without taking over the ride. It is nearly impossible to tell that the Gain is an e-Bike at all from a distance. The Orbea Gain is an electric bike designed for true cyclists.  

The Gain is bike-first, but it is packed with some of the best tech in the world. In fact, it has to be more technologically advanced than most to mimic the ride feel of a traditional bike so well. Having a simple button to monitor pedal assist and battery life is much more natural for road cyclists than a bulky computer. It is also awesome to have lights ready to go as long as your battery is charged. There are a lot of laws about lights on electric bikes, and your Gain automatically complies with them all. The Orbea Gain is a true all-road endurance bike that is a ton of fun to ride.
