How To Fix An E-Bike Charger That Isn't Charging Properly

One lesson I've learned from working on bikes is that the obvious culprit isn't always guilty. When an e-Bike won't charge, many riders immediately blame the battery. Yet in many cases, the problem is elsewhere, often hiding in the charger.

If e-Bike chargers could talk, they would probably tell you they don’t appreciate being dropped multiple times, left in a cold garage, and that you should treat them as well as you treat your bike. I’m personally glad mine doesn’t speak; I’d never hear the end of it.

Like many electrical components, chargers don’t last forever. They have a shelf life and actually have to work very hard to control and convert high voltages. In this article, I’m going to tell you the process of diagnosing and fixing one.

How Does An E-Bike Charger Work?


Before we start, it’s really important to understand how complex chargers are. People see the boxes and think they are pretty empty inside, maybe just a few coils, but they are really quite something. They are essentially a small computer. Charger geek here!

The charger draws current from the wall, but it can’t directly supply it to the battery because the wall current is AC (Alternating Current). The charger converts that current into DC (Direct Current). Then the charger has to deliver current, but it can’t just go full-gas. It has to send the correct current.

  • A 36V battery typically charges to around 42V
  • A 48V battery typically charges to around 54.6V
  • A 52V battery typically charges to around 58.8V

After it has started sending the current, the BMS (Battery Management System) takes over. It has to monitor the battery voltage, temperature, charging speed, and even the health of the battery cells. If it detects issues, it charges more slowly or even stops charging altogether to protect the battery and itself. Here we were thinking chargers were boring, hey?

Step-by-Step Guide On Fixing A Charger


In the next section, I will explain how to diagnose and fix an e-Bike charger. Chargers are dangerous and should not be opened. If your charger has broken, there’s a strong possibility you will need to replace it.
 
I recommend following this step-by-step guide first to ensure we can do the best we can before it comes to that. This is going to be the same on all different types of e-Bikes, such as e-MTB, commuters, road, and gravel bikes


Step One: Check The Power Source And Environment


Let’s start by not blaming the charger and instead focusing on the power source itself. You'll want to try another appliance in the socket to make sure it works properly. I know this is a silly ask, but I caught a few people out here before.

Next, if that is all good, you will want to try removing the fuse from the plug and replacing it with a new one. You can typically tell when they are gone because they look burnt. Make sure to put the correct fuse in. If the power is coming from an extension lead, you will need to check these fuses.

Always remember that if it’s too hot or too cold, chargers often do not work. Batteries hate extreme temperatures, and often safety features cut them off to protect them. If the environment isn’t right, they just don’t charge.


Step Two: Check Your Charger


Now it’s time to focus on the charger itself. It’s so important to check for damage first. Is the casing cracked or the charging cables broken? Are any of the cables damaged or loose? Can you see any burn marks? Has the charger got wet?

The scary thing is, you should be very wary if your charger smells of burning. The charger is swollen, like it's bulging outwards. Are any wires exposed that can be touched? If you find any of these problems, bin the charger and get another.


Step Three: Check The Lights


Most chargers have a smart way to tell you what’s going on. This is the indicator light. Everyone typically works differently, and the manual, if you still have it, will explain it in detail, but in general, this is what you will find. Find a fault? Let’s inspect further.

  • Green = fully charged
  • Red = charging
  • Flashing red = fault


Step Four: Inspect The Charging Port And Battery Connection


So we have tested from the wall to the charger. Now logically it’s time to work down to the bike to see if there’s a problem further down the line. I would recommend removing the battery if you can here and ensuring the bike is off for safety.

Look at the plugs and charging port for bent or broken pins and loose connectors. If that’s all fine, check for corrosion (white or green residue). The bent pins will require replacement, and the corrosion can often be cleaned off with a proper cleaner.

Once all that is checked, put the battery back on and check the connections where it sits. Often, these go bad, leaving the bike unable to charge.


Step Five: Test With Another Charger


So you have checked everything possible. If it’s still not working, it’s time to source another charger and test it. A bike shop might have one, or a dealership might have one for you to try. If that works, you know your charger has an internal fault. If it doesn’t, it’s time to contact an e-Bike expert, such as someone at Upway.
