As cyclists, we spend years convincing ourselves that discomfort is somehow part of the experience. The Gazelle Arroyo looks at all of that and politely says, "No, thank you."

The older I get, the more I appreciate comfort over speed. Years ago, I was happy to suffer through rides, but not anymore. In my search for a comfortable e-Bike, I was lucky enough to come across the Gazelle Arroyo, a bike whose makers said: “How enjoyable can we make this ride?”

Classed as one of the most comfortable e-Bikes on the market, it has gained significant popularity. On closer inspection, it’s much more than just a comfortable ride, and in this article I’m going to tell you why you might want to buy one.

What Are Gazelle E-Bikes?

Gazelle is not just another bike brand; it is one of the oldest. They were founded in 1892 in the Netherlands and have been making great bikes ever since. They helped shape what Dutch cycling is and continue to run successfully.

Unlike many other brands that started in another engineering sector and later moved into bikes, they started with bikes. Fun fact: Orbea made firearms before bikes— wild that. Gazelle is not known for Tour de France performance but for comfort and reliability. They have a wide range of bikes such as;

  • Medeo (The Everyday Commuter)
  • Arroyo (The Comfort Cruiser)
  • Ultimate (The Premium All-Rounder)
  • Eclipse (The Long-Distance Explorer)
  • Avignon (The Luxury Tourer)
  • Grenoble (The Everyday Comfort Specialist)

The Different Types Of Arroyo

The Arroyo comes in a few different specification levels, each of which differs greatly. You will have some with a less powerful 50Nm motor, some with chain drives, and some with belt drives. The table below provides everything you need to know.

What’s The Design Of The Gazelle Arroyo Like?

The first factor to mention about the Arroyo is the design. It’s all about comfort and ease of use. It’s got a low-slung design without a top tube. There are many reasons for this. It makes it really easy to get on and off, and it keeps the motor and battery weight low for stability and control.

You have the batteries hidden inside the frame, internal cable routing, mudguards, and a rear rack. As far as bikes from other brands go, I don’t think many bikes look this clean, and the available colors are all very neutral and not crazy out there.

Is The Gazelle Arroyo Comfortable And Practical?

The Arroyo is all about comfort. Everything about the design is for it to be very user-friendly. The step-through frame, comfort seat, and tall upright handlebars provide a good upright riding geometry. You also get a suspension fork at the front and, on the seatpost, a small suspension system.

It’s also a very practical bike, with a rear cargo rack for carrying goods and lighting for night or low-light riding. The larger tires can also be run at lower pressures, helping smooth the road and provide lots of grip in poor weather.

Does The Gazelle Arroyo Have Good Components?

When we talk about components, I really like to discuss not just electrical components but mechanical components as well. As an e-Bike expert, I can soon tell when brands are trying to cut corners, but that’s not the Gazelle way. Gazelle doesn’t cheap out on anything.

Electrical Components

Let’s start with the motor and battery. Gazelle uses the Bosch smart system, which is probably the most common high-end electric bike motor-and-battery system. They are incredible and not only provide great power, range, and assist levels, but they deliver them smoothly from a mid-drive motor, not a hub motor like other brands use to save money.

Mechanical Components

The mechanical components are also fantastic. Using Shimano gearing on the chain drive systems and Shimano and Enviolo on the belt drive systems and hub systems. You also get hydraulic disc brakes for excellent stopping power, along with strong wheels and tires.

Is The Gazelle Arroyo Worth The Money?

People really underestimate Gazelle bikes. They are neither the most expensive nor the cheapest. For what you get for your money, they are worth every penny. You are investing in great quality, with no cut corners or cheap-outs anywhere. Gazelle bikes are built to last and give a fantastic experience!

The Arroyo price range is $3,000 to $4,500 new. There’s no denying that the premium commuter market is tough and very competitive. The Gazelle really stands up to its peers, and I feel it offers the best value for money, even if it's not the cheapest.

Pros

  • Exceptionally comfortable riding position
  • Smooth and reliable Bosch motor
  • Low-maintenance belt drive (C5 & C380 models)
  • Excellent build quality
  • Suspension fork and seatpost improve comfort
  • Easy step-through frame design
  • Stable and confidence-inspiring handling
  • Quiet and natural power delivery

Cons

  • More comfort-focused than sporty
  • Premium pricing on higher-end models
  • Heavier than a traditional bicycle
  • Not designed for off-road riding
  • Top speed limited to 20 mph
  • May feel too relaxed for performance-focused riders

Overall, the Gazelle Arroyo is a wonderful bike, and one I would be very proud to ride. Wonder bike with great specs, built to last.
