There is no doubt that e-Bikes have transformed cycling. They are helping people ride further, tackle bigger hills and replace more car journeys than ever before. At the same time, concerns about rider safety have grown alongside their popularity, with studies showing a sharp increase in reported e-Bike injuries over recent years.


The important question, however, is whether those figures simply reflect the rapid growth in e-Bike ownership or whether riding an e-Bike genuinely carries a greater risk than riding a conventional bicycle.

In this article, I examine what the latest California data tells us about rising e-Bike injuries, where the statistics have limitations, and what conclusions we can— and cannot— draw from the available evidence.

Recent study reveals the latest statistics on e-Bike injuries in California

A new study out of the University of San Diego, published this month, analyzed traffic incident data from the California Highway Patrol Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) from 2018 to 2024. The headline figures from this six-year study into e-Bike and bicycle collisions are certainly striking.

Between 2018 and 2024, the study recorded 4,035 e-Bike collisions and 58,332 conventional bicycle collisions. E-Bike injuries increased sharply, both in total numbers and as a proportion of all cyclist injuries, rising from just two recorded incidents in 2018 to 1,566 in 2024. By contrast, the number of conventional bicycle collisions remained relatively stable.

Additional highlights include that e-Bike riders were generally younger than regular cyclists, with a significantly greater proportion less than 14 years old. Moderate-to-severe injuries were more common among e-Bike riders than people who ride regular bicycles

Possible limitations of the study


From what I can see, the study does not fully account for the likely increase in e-Bike use over the same period. That rising baseline could explain at least some of the increase in collisions.

If e-Bike use grew significantly between 2018 and 2024, as I strongly suspect it did, then we would naturally expect e-Bike collisions to increase both in number and as a proportion of total cycling collisions. That alone would not necessarily prove that e-Bikes are more dangerous than conventional bicycles.

To make that comparison properly, we would need collision rates based on exposure, such as injuries per journey, per mile travelled or per hour ridden. We would also need reliable data showing how much e-Bike and conventional bicycle use changed during the study period.

For example, if conventional bicycle use remained broadly stable as a proportion of the population, that could help explain why bicycle collision numbers also remained stable. Meanwhile, rapidly rising e-Bike ownership and usage could produce a sharp rise in e-Bike collisions even if the individual risk per journey had not increased to the same extent.

None of this changes the fact that there has been a very sharp and worrying increase in reported e-Bike injuries. That trend should be taken seriously, investigated properly and addressed through appropriate safety measures, just as it would be if similarly alarming figures were reported for conventional bicycles.

Are e-Bikes really more dangerous than normal bikes?

This debate has been getting a lot of press recently, with cases across the US involving electric bikes or illegal e-moto incidents. It’s true that with great power comes great responsibility (and perhaps greater risk)— and electric bikes have much more power and are capable of higher speeds than regular bikes. That added power, speed, and weight of e-Bikes means there’s the potential for a more severe crash with significantly increased mass and force.

What the recent study confirms is that crashes involving e-Bikes tend to result in more serious injuries. Moderate-to-severe injuries were more common among e-Bike riders than conventional cyclists, at 15.8% compared with 11.9%. So, in that sense, e-Bikes do appear to be more dangerous than conventional bikes.

However, it needs to be balanced against the fact that overall mortality was similar between the two groups: 2.0% for e-Bike riders compared with 1.7% for conventional cyclists. This means the likelihood of dying while riding an e-Bike was marginally higher and not statistically significant enough to cause major concern for the average rider. 

However, the study did note a significant divergence in 2024, when e-Bike mortality was higher (p=0.027). One year of data is not enough to determine whether this was a temporary blip or the beginning of a wider trend, but it does suggest that continued year-on-year monitoring is necessary, and California seems motivated to do so. 

Are kids more at risk from e-Bike crashes?


Young riders, fast electric bikes, and incidents are making headlines. But are children actually more likely to be involved in e-Bike crashes? If so, this is something that should be of real concern to parents, schools and policymakers.

For me, based on the data, it is clear that children are more involved in e-Bike crashes. The age group with the highest number of e-Bike injuries is those aged 14 and under, and this is proportionally and significantly higher than for conventional bicycle collisions. More worrying still, the number of children injured on e-Bikes is continuing to rise each year.

This is not simply scaremongering. The evidence suggests that children are at greater risk of crashing on e-Bikes. Exactly why that is the case is more complicated, but I suspect it is largely because electric bikes are still a relatively new, misunderstood and, as a result, sometimes misused technology.

Reports suggest that high-powered, unregulated e-Bikes (aka “e-motos”) capable of speeds between 40 and 60 mph are being sold misleadingly as low-powered, bicycle-style e-Bikes with much lower built-in speed limits. The result is that significant numbers of children may be riding what are effectively illegal, high-powered electric motorcycles without licensing, training or registration. If that is happening, it is undoubtedly compounding the problem and increasing the risks faced by young riders.

A legal low-powered e-Bike should look and behave much like a conventional bicycle, with pedal assistance that cuts out at the legal speed limit for your country or state. In contrast, many high-powered models resemble small motorbikes, often have much larger motors and batteries, may include a throttle that works without pedaling, and are advertised with top speeds of 40–60 mph. 

Parents should buy from reputable retailers rather than unknown online sellers, and check the manufacturer's stated motor power and top assisted speed.

What can parents do to keep children safe on e-Bikes?

The first step is making sure your child is riding a legal, age-appropriate e-Bike rather than an unregulated high-powered model. Parents should buy from reputable retailers, check that the bike complies with local regulations and avoid machines advertised with motorcycle-like speeds.

Children should also wear a properly fitted helmet, learn basic road safety, ride within their abilities and be supervised until they have gained sufficient experience.

Should the latest statistics worry e-Bike riders?

They should encourage caution rather than panic. The increase in injuries deserves careful investigation, but overall mortality remained broadly similar between e-Bike and conventional bicycle riders for most of the study period. Continued monitoring will help establish whether recent changes represent a temporary fluctuation or a longer-term trend.
