Crust’s history

Crust is one of the newer bike companies around, coming to fruition in 2015. In 2009, former plumber Matt Whitehead took a 15,000km ride through Mexico, causing him to fall in love with bikepacking and all-terrain DIY cycling. He kept riding around the world, and in 2014, while in Nepal, he decided to start cold-calling Taiwanese frame factories with the goal of designing a better touring bike. Eventually, he launched the Crust Evasion, a touring bike with MTB-like geometry and huge tire clearance.

The Evasion gave Crust a following, and soon enough, they had a collection of do-it-all frames that became wildly popular in the bikepacking space. Touring bikes and all-road bikes are their specialty, but they also make more traditional gravel bikes, mountain bikes, and commuter bikes. Crust prioritizes creativity and artistic freedom over industry growth, and they have carved out a niche in the cycling world.

Crust’s other bikes

The ATB line is what Crust is known for, but they dabble in more traditional categories as well. Their large lineup includes mountain bikes, gravel bikes, commuter bikes, and some bikes that really can’t be categorized.

  • The Bombora: The Bombora is the most popular gravel bike that Crust makes. It is capable of all-road endurance riding or fast gravel performance. Its lightweight Chromoly steel frame can be paired with a carbon ENVE fork to optimize stiffness, or a steel fork depending on preference. The Bombora handles like a road bike, but can house tires up to 650b x 2.3 inches, making it a versatile choice.

  • The Wombat: The Wombat is a fun hardtail 27.5-inch mountain bike made with durable and lightweight steel. It utilizes classic geometry and minimalism to thrive on singletrack and pump tracks. The Wombat is for the rider who wants maximum durability and nimble performance with a BMX-style mountain bike.

  • The Florida Man: While it doesn’t neatly fit into a category, The Florida Man can be considered a single-speed urban commuter bike. It is fun to ride and modeled after BMX geometry. It features a steel frame and can run traditional brakes or a rear coaster brake. The Florida Man can be a city bike, a beach cruiser, or anything in between.

Key Takeaways

  1. The lines of categorization are blurred: Crust has no desire to name exact categories for their bikes. Instead, they want different levels of speed, capability, and weights. It is up to you what you do with the bike after that.
  2.  Crust bikes go the distance: There is no touring challenge too long for a Crust bike. The brand exists because of bikepacking, and they are centered around enhancing the touring experience.
  3.  Upway carries used bikes: Take a look at the Upway website and see if we have any Crust bikes in stock for a low price.
