Colnago’s History

Ernesto Colnago started this historic bike company in Cambiago, Italy, in 1954. He was originally a bike racer, but a crash ended his career, so he shifted his focus to making frames. Almost immediately, Colnago became a leader in cycling innovation. Just two years into the existence of the company, Colnago reinvented fork manufacturing, making them more durable. About a decade later, they launched the first steel frame, instantly making the standard for road bikes much lighter in weight. Eventually, they became the first company to use disc brakes on their road bikes, evolving the sport.

With a longtime focus on racing success, the brand has pushed road bike technology and aided countless champions. This began when Ernesto Colnago became the head mechanic for the dominant Molteni team, which included two-time Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx. That winning history continues today, as Colnago provides the bikes for the UAE-Emirates squad. The team is loaded with talent, including this era’s most dominant champion, Tadej Pogačar. Every time you see Pogačar dropping someone on a climb or flying through a time trial, he is on a Colnago.

Colnago Road Bikes

Road bikes are Colnago’s bread and butter. They are what propelled them to the top of the industry, and they are the reason they are still there. The reason Colnago road bikes have been so highly touted for the better part of eight decades is that they never rested on their laurels. They continue to evolve with cycling and stay out ahead of the latest tech. Here are some of the best Colnago road bikes you can get.

  • Colnago V5Rs: When you see Tadej Pogačar crossing the finish line with his hands in the air, he is usually on this bike. The V5Rs is the latest in a long lineage of VRs models. It is a very lightweight climbing bike that is designed for the modern meta in road racing. This means it is aerodynamic enough to sprint with the best despite its climbing profile. There are some awesome special edition Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and UCI Champion versions of this bike that are worth checking out.

  • Colnago Y1Rs: If you are the type of rider who loves cranking watts into the pedals and simply wants to go fast, the Y1Rs is for you. Made for UAE-Emirates to succeed on flat stages, this bike is incredibly stiff and aerodynamic, promoting maximum power transfer and sprint speed.

  • Colnago C72: The Colnago C-Series is the flagship bike of their company’s history. While this bike is not used in stage races, it is more than capable of racing and is a very high-end endurance bike. This makes it perfect for classics and gran fondos. Rather than use the typical monocoque carbon frame, Colnago used a seven-piece construction, allowing their engineers to fine-tune the functionality of each piece. In other words, this bike is stiff where it can be, and comfortable where it needs to be.

Colnago’s Other Bikes

Carbon fiber road bikes are what Colnago is known for, but their world-class engineering extends to other disciplines as well. They make excellent gravel bikes, and even have a heritage collection of steel-framed bikes to commemorate their time as pioneers in that space.

  • Colnago C68 Gravel: The gravel C-Series is similar to its road counterpart; very versatile and comfortable, but more than capable of holding its own at the highest level of racing. The C68 Gravel is for when you want to adventure onto some more difficult terrain than you would on a road bike or race-specific gravel bike. Its carbon frame is handmade in Italy and not outsourced for manufacturing.

  • Colnago G4-X: The G4-X is the aforementioned racing gravel bike. It features a monocoque carbon frame and was designed with more of a cyclocross and racing inspiration than an adventure vibe. If you are the type of rider who likes to go fast on all terrain, this is the way to go. With 47mm of tire clearance, it is a very capable racer.

  • Colnago Steelnovo: Modern steel frames are hard to find, and the Colnago Steelnovo is at the top of the heap. Each lightweight Steelnovo frame is handcrafted in Italy and takes a full day of work to manufacture. The welds are invisible, and all of the lugs are 3D printed. The Steelnovo is a steel road bike that has no problem keeping up with modern riding.

Key Takeaways

  1. Colnago dominates the road: Many of the best cyclists on the planet chose to sign with a team that uses Colnago bikes. The best of the best trust Colnago with their livelihood when it comes to making fast road bikes.
  2.  Endurance road bikes can be fast too: The C-Series is technically categorized as an endurance road bike, but it’s so light and fast that it feels weird to call it one. The C72 proves that comfort doesn’t have to slow you down.
  3.  Give steel a chance: Carbon is obviously the standard today, but you will be surprised at how lightweight and durable a steel frame can be when it is made by experts.
