Benno has carved out its niche as “sport cargo bikes”, but what does that actually mean? Here’s a closer look at one of my favorite electric bike brands on the market.

I try not to pick favorites, but I have a soft spot for Benno Bikes. The brand knows what they’re doing and stays focused on a small fleet of utility e-Bikes that make total sense for how modern riders love to, well, ride. I like the looks, I like the ride, and I like the vibe— I think that’s plenty to give Benno two thumbs up, but I’ll dive into the details in case you really need more proof. Here’s my guide to the Benno brand and a comparison of its lineup of five agile and practical electric cargo bikes.

What are Benno electric bikes?

Benno specializes in compact and practical electric cargo bikes, or as the brand calls them, “sport cargo bikes”. These well-designed e-Bikes are just as agile as standard-size bikes, but are able to carry serious amounts of cargo or a couple of young passengers. All Benno electric bikes are powered by a Bosch drive system and are compatible with a wide range of high-quality cargo accessories like panniers, bags, baskets, racks, and child seats.

Benno Bikes has an interesting history. Founder Benno Baenziger started the brand in 2015 after departing from his previous (and very successful) bike brand, Electra Bicycle Company, which was subsequently sold to Trek. The new Benno brand ran with the idea of “sport cargo bikes” and focused on that niche ever since— and it’s been a good call.

Why should you ride a Benno e-Bike?

In the increasingly crowded electric bike market, Benno still manages to stand out. Like a great restaurant with a small, well-thought-out menu, the brand focuses on what it does best: utility e-Bikes. Its limited fleet of five models puts on display elegant design and smart, practical features.

Benno’s big thing is what it calls “Etility® Design”. This basically refers to bikes that make it easy to carry cargo while still being nimble. As the brand says, regular e-Bikes offer very little utility while full-size cargo can be too big and awkward to ride daily. This Etility® Design is the right balance— though you may know this category better as “utility bikes” or “compact cargo bikes”. It’s an exciting type of bike that’s catching on; the extremely popular Specialized Globe Haul is another great example.

Here are highlights of Benno electric bikes:

  • Reliable Bosch mid-drive motors and batteries
  • Etility® Design for cargo-carrying ability and agile ride feel
  • Customizable with sturdy, high-quality accessories
  • Stellar design and build quality

Benno Electric Bikes: Model Comparison

Benno Boost

Benno Boost electric bike

What it is: Benno’s flagship sport cargo bike, built to be the ultimate multitasker, from commutes to cargo hauls and passenger transport.

The Boost is a sporty and compact cargo e-Bike with plenty of versatility. It feels easy to ride with smaller 24” wheels, riser handlebars, and comfortable geometry. This popular model has tons of build options with different Bosch motors as well as cargo-carrying accessories, depending on what you need. It comes with integrated lights, an external Bosch battery, and Magura 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes. Versions are available with mechanical Shimano gearing or a belt drive.

Benno 46er

What it is: Standard-size electric hybrid bike that can take on rugged rides and plenty of cargo.

The Benno 46er is a souped-up model that’s the same length and a regular electric bike, but comes tricked out with more features. The wheelbase is shorter than that of the Benno Boost, but it has the same cargo-carry capacity and can be fitted with front and rear racks. The most interesting part is the 26” front wheel for extra comfort and control, but a smaller 24” wheel for strength and a lowered center of gravity. It’s the final numbers in those unequal wheel diameters that give the model its “46er” name. Like all other Benno models, the 46er has a Bosch mid-drive motor, but opts to integrate the battery inside the downtube instead of placing it behind the seatpost.

Benno eJoy

What it is: Electric Dutch-inspired bike that’s a bit more stylish, and still plenty cargo-capable.

Softer around the edges, but still a total workhorse, the Benno eJoy combines style and cargo-carrying. The eJoy is basically a modern version of the classic Dutch-style bicycle with a Bosch mid-drive motor, externally mounted battery, and options for 5-speed internal hub or 10-speed mechanical gearing. The step-through frame makes hopping on and off the bikes a breeze. There’s room for one passenger on the sturdy rear rack, as well as front and rear bike bags.

Benno RemiDemi

What it is: Approachable and quirky compact cargo bike that’s easy to maneuver, with room for one passenger.

The RemiDemi reminds me of mini-velos that are becoming more popular these days, only outfitted with fat tires and a Bosch motor. It’s a fun and quirky build that is still super practical, and a total blast to ride. Sometimes cyclists stick to the typical, conventional designs, but this one makes tons of sense for enjoyable commuting and riding with a young passenger on the back, too. Cool frame shape and colored rims! Plus, the model name sounds like my name, so that’s a win.

Benno RemiDemi XL

What it is: Larger version with room for two rear passengers, additional cargo, and a super stylish look.

The Benno RemiDemi XL extends the wheelbase of the standard model, making room for two rear passengers and more cargo capacity. There’s a pulley wheel to take up the slack in the longer chain and a center stand for more stable loading and unloading. This Bosch-powered long-tail cargo bike (that’s still not awkwardly long) is a great choice for families with small kids to replace car trips with fun, two-wheeled adventures.
