What are Electra electric bikes?

Electra, a subsidiary brand of Trek, makes comfortable cruiser bikes and commuter bikes that are fun and stylish. There are several electric bike models for even easier pedaling for all types of riders. Most Electra e-Bikes are either Class 2 or Class 3 models.

Electra was founded in California by Benno Bänziger and Jeano Erforth in 1993 and was later acquired by Trek in 2014. After that, Benno Bänziger actually went on to immediately start Benno Bikes— a popular brand that specializes in utility and cargo electric bikes, often stocked by Upway.

Electra bike naming conventions

Electra’s fleet of electric bikes is a relatively small one, but there are a lot of distinct models and versions to choose from. The brand adds plenty of suffixes and clues about a bike’s specifications in the name, but they aren’t always so obvious.

Here’s what each of the Electra electric bike model naming conventions means:

  • Go!” indicates the bike is electric
  • Number of gears: It’s labeled with a number followed by a letter (D or i). The number is how many gears— D means a mechanical rear derailleur, whereas an i means an internal geared hub. For example, 7D for a 7-speed derailleur and 5i for a 5-speed internal hub.
  • “EQ” (Equipped): Models with "EQ" in the name have fenders and front and rear LED lights.
  • “Path” refers to a rugged version of the bike for bumpier terrain
  • “Step-Thru” or “Step-Over” indicates the geometry of the bike
  • “S” stands for speed, indicating the higher class (typically Class 3, 28 mph)

Why ride Electra e-Bikes?

Electra electric bikes are approachable, entry-level models that fit into any lifestyle. Electra models prioritize comfort, stability, and style, so they are often a bit easier to ride and have fun color options compared to other brands. The cruisers and hybrid models feel at home on boardwalks, around town, and on the bike path with recreational riders.

The brand is also known for its Flat Foot Technology— this geometry design shifts the pedals slightly forward, enabling riders to achieve full leg extension while pedaling and still place both feet flat on the ground without leaving the saddle. Basically, it makes it easier to come to a stop without having to lean over, which can feel unstable or be challenging for certain riders.

Most Electra e-Bikes have:

  • Reliable rear hub or mid-drive motors
  • Colorful frame paint options
  • Relaxed, comfortable riding position
  • Excellent value

Electra Electric Bike Model Comparison

Electra Ponto Go!

The Ponto Go! is a moped-style electric bike with a bench seat that can support two riders. It’s a Class 3 electric bike that can assist up to 28 mph (and is also equipped with a throttle that can assist at slower speeds). There’s a 750W rear hub motor, and the battery is externally mounted to the frame, right above the pedals and bottom bracket. Super fun double-rider that looks super cool. If you’re buying it for your child, make sure they’re wearing helmets and ride safely!

Electra Townie Go!

Electra Townie Go!

Electra’s most popular bike, the Townie Go! is a classic Dutch design with a boost. There’s a mid-drive motor, disc brakes, stylish color options, and several model versions to choose from. EQ models have fenders and integrated lights. The 7D model has a 7-speed mechanical derailleur, the 5i means a 5-speed internal gear hub, and there’s also the 10-speed 10D model.

Electra Cruiser Go!

Even more comfortable and relaxed than the Townie, the Cruiser Go! amplifies the classic cruiser bike. Straight from the boardwalk, this single-speed, step-through cruiser provides extra power and fun for recreational rides.

Electra Loft Go!

Electra Loft Go!

Keeping with the times, Electra came out with the Loft Go! It’s a sleek hybrid electric bike with some pretty elegant lines, a slim profile, and frame options. As with other Electra models, there’s a rear hub motor, disc brakes, and a super-comfortable riding position for easy riding around the city.

Electra Vale Go!

Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1

Vale is Spanish for “OK”— and the Electra Vale Go! gives the go-ahead for a totally fun time on two wheels. It’s an elevated model within Electra’s fleet because of its clean design, Bosch batteries, and Bosch mid-drive motor. The central motor provides a more natural-feeling boost and, as a Class 3 electric bike, assists up to 28 mph.
