venton loves to tout its commuter model— the Level 2— as the ideal e-Bike for urban riding. Let’s take a look to see if this popular commuter e-Bike lives up to the hype.

How we get around the city by bike is a highly personal activity, customized by our most frequented shortcuts, favorite paths, and the trusty bike we call our own. All that personal preference makes it impossible for bike brands to design an urban e-Bike for everyone, but they can give it their best shot.

Aventon’s recommended flavor for city-goers comes in the form of the Level 2, the second iteration of the brand’s flagship commuter electric bike. In this article, I’ll break down what to look for when searching for an urban e-Bike and how the Level 2 performs out in the wild— well, however wild the concrete jungle can get.

What is the Aventon Level 2?

The Level 2 is Aventon’s dedicated commuter e-Bike, and the second-generation model boasts some enhancements like a torque sensor and integrated lighting. With moderately wide tires and a front suspension, it leans toward the more comfortable end of the hybrid e-Bike category, making it an excellent choice for beginners and casual riders seeking a smooth and enjoyable ride across the city.

For a closer look at the Aventon Level 2, I recently wrote an in-depth review of the commuter e-Bike and its technical specifications.

What urban riders need from an e-Bike

Now this is my opinion, of course, but considering I don’t remember the last time I went more than a week without riding a bike in a city, I may know a thing or two about what urban cyclists are looking for in a bike. That said, the beautiful thing about riding a bike in the city is that it’s totally up to you and depends on your preferences and typical commute. Follow my advice if you want or go your own way— I may even suggest you choose the latter.

But in general, urban e-Bikes should have:

  • Balanced frame geometry that feels comfortable and efficient
  • Multi-surface tires with decent width
  • Hydraulic disc brakes are a must on e-Bikes
  • Suspension if you want the extra cushion
  • Rear rack and fenders are often included

Comfort

Perhaps named after the carpenter's tool (but I doubt it), the Level 2 does have a balanced frame design that makes for a comfortable and efficient ride. The upright sitting position goes easy on the joints and encourages riders to open up their upper body instead of tuck forward, including riser handlebars. It’s not as sleek as, say the popular Specialized Turbo 4.0 SL or flat-bar road bikes, but it’s not trying to be— comfort-oriented commuters will appreciate the relaxed frame.

Riders can choose between a step-thru or step-over frame as well as Regular or Large frame sizes depending on their height. One of the most important features when it comes to rider comfort is the short-travel suspension fork on the Level 2. Not all hybrid e-Bikes have one and this model effectively soaks up the bumps on uneven road surfaces to reduce fatigue. Even the occasional pothole or curb jump will have less sting to it, but the suspension fork makes for a more cushy ride rather than a sporty one.

Pedal assist & throttle

Aventon e-Bikes are known to have plenty of pep in their step and may feel a bit zestier compared to similar Gazelle or Specialized models. But that zippier boost doesn’t crowd out smooth acceleration— I remember testing out the Aventon Soltera and Level models and enjoying the suave acceleration, especially in contrast to other affordable electric bike options.

The Level 2 is powered by a 500W rear hub motor and this second-gen version has an updated torque sensor (which helps with the smooth power delivery). Rear hub motors are less pricey than their mid-drive counterparts and can seem to “push” the bike. But Aventon models hit the right balance with their rear hub drives and don’t feel too torquey or overpowered. The Level 2 comes as a Class 2 e-Bike with a top assist and throttle speed of 20 mph, but can be configured as a Class 3 e-Bike

Commuting and cargo capabilities

Aventon Level 2 electric bike rear rack

If you’re searching for a commuter e-Bike, it has to stand up to the hustle and bustle of the city. Practicality and convenience are key, allowing you to ride to work comfortably but also swing by the grocery store on the way home if you need.

Like most commuter models out there, the Level 2 comes with a sturdy rear rack and fenders on both wheels. Slap on some panniers or a top bag and you’re ready to carry all the stuff you need away from home. And those fenders will keep your clothes (and cyclists behind you) as clean and dry as possible.

A favorite feature of mine is the integrated rear lights on the left and right seat stays. The red lights are built into the frame and are a super sleek safety solution that are also visible from the side. Aventon fans and techy commuters are hoping that those lights turn into usable turn signals soon, but we’ll have to wait a while longer for that feature. Regardless, turn signals may be a bit gimmicky at this point— a good old hand signal hasn’t let me down yet, only drivers that don’t care to pay much attention to me or my lights.

Value

One of the most attractive aspects of the Aventon Level 2 is its incredible value. The accessible e-Bike is built for entry-level riders for commuters sticking to a budget, but no one will have to sacrifice on performance. And city-goers can score an even sweeter deal by buying the Level 2 from Upway. Both the original model and the updated Level 2 are best sellers in our huge inventory of high-quality new and like-new electric bikes!
