Why Tallahassee Is Great for Cycling (And Where to Ride)

Tallahassee is one of Florida's best cycling cities. Unlike many of the others, it isn’t pancake flat, and you are blessed with rolling hills and some amazing cycling infrastructure. You also have amazing greenways, tree-lined canopy roads, and most importantly, excellent coffee.

You might be riding to improve fitness, to commute, or just to explore. Tallahassee has everything you need, and riding an electric bike makes it even more enjoyable.

Tallahassee has some excellent cycling routes to explore. Here are our favourites and the most popular amongst many locals who use e-Bikes.

  • St. Mark's Trail – A long paved trail stretching miles south of the city and one of the most popular cycling routes in the region. Perfect for hybrid and city bikes.

They are all excellent places to buy a bike. It’s good to mention that Higher Ground Bike Shop and University Cycles are independent shops. David’s World Cycle and REI are big chain stores.

With big chain stores, there’s generally more stock available, prices can be very competitive, and they will have their own brands, such as REI's Co-op bikes, or use some of the bigger brands. They lack a strong cycling experience and often have little place in the local community.

Independent shops have less stock, but it’s not rare for them to have more access to other brands, and you do get a lot more cycling expertise in these stores. They also have group rides and events. I personally feel like I get something from both of them, but it’s a personal choice more than anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test-ride an e-Bike before buying?

Yes. Many local Tallahassee bike shops offer test rides. It’s a good way to get a feel for an electric bike, but unless you have ridden a lot before, it’s tough to know what will be right long term. Making sure the bike type and size are right is the most important factor.

Are e-Bikes good for hills?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of an electric bike is its pedal-assist mode, which makes climbing hills much easier. It doesn’t feel like on/off power but a smooth delivery, and typically gives a very natural ride feel.
What type of e-Bike is best for Tallahassee?
Hybrid or commuter e-Bikes are usually the best option for most riders because they are very comfortable, easy to use, and work well on greenways, city streets, and longer rides.
