Tern HSD vs Tern GSD E-Bike Comparison

Written by: Robbie Ferri | August 3, 2026 Time to read 6 min

Buying a cargo e-Bike is a bit like choosing a family car. Some people only need enough room for the weekly shop. Others need space for two children, a dog, half of IKEA... and maybe a week's holiday luggage. That's exactly where the Tern HSD and GSD differ.

The Big Differences Between The Tern HSD and GSD

Now for the exciting part. We are going to discuss the big differences between the HSD and the GSD cargo bikes. You would be surprised just how much these differ.

Size And Capacity

When looking at pictures, there’s no denying that there is a size difference. The HSD is the smaller model, and the GSD is the larger model. If you are looking for a compact cargo bike for carrying shopping and running errands, then the HSD is the best option. If you are planning trips to Ikea and have passengers, the GSD is the best option.
You also have a big difference in the weight the bikes can carry. The larger GSD can carry an extra 60kg compared to the HSD, which is the weight of a small human. Although this sounds excellent, bigger isn’t always better if you don’t need it.

Size, Handling, And Storage

This moves us on to size, handling, and storage. It’s worth noting that the GSD is about 6kg heavier than the HSD. This might not sound like much, but if you live in an apartment building and need to use a lift or stairs, it matters. The HSD is much more agile, easier to store, and, in my opinion, a bit easier to live with than the GSD, provided you don’t need the extra carrying space.

Motor & Battery

The HSD and the GSD have different motors and batteries, even though they are kinda the same. Hear me out. This will make sense. The HSD has a Bosch Performance Line motor, produces 75 Nm of torque, and has a range of, they say, 70 miles, but I’m more thinking in the real world, 50.

The GSD has a more powerful Bosch Performance Line motor or the Cargo Line motor producing 85 Nm of torque, and with dual-battery options, up to 130 miles of range, but in the real world I'd say 90 miles.

Which One Offers Better Value?

Tern does make a premium cargo bike. They are not budget-like options from Lectric or Rad Power Bikes. The HSD ranges from $3,800 to $6,000, and the GSD ranges from $5,000 to $10,000. For what they do, and how they can change your life, they offer excellent value. For what you are spending, you are getting good value for money. What matters is choosing the right one for you.

Choose the HSD if you...

  • Commute
  • Run errands
  • Occasionally carry one child
  • Want to save money
  • Need something compact

Choose the GSD if you...

  • Carry two children
  • Replace your car
  • Carry heavy shopping
  • Use it every day
  • Want maximum versatility

Final Verdict

The big difference between these bikes is the carrying capacity and price. I personally would use a bike to transport family and go to Ikea, so the GSD works for me. If I didn’t need to, then I would 100% be on the HSD. Overall, both great cargo bikes.
