If your frame is damaged with cracked carbon fiber or twisted aluminum, it is probably time for a new bike. While frames can be fixed, the cost and headache are rarely worth the outcome. When it’s time to buy a new bike, you will probably want to get some cash for your old one. The reality of the situation is that a damaged frame is very hard to sell. There are still some ways to get some cash back for your busted bike.

Will Upway accept a cracked or damaged frame?

Upway does not accept bikes with cracked or damaged frames. While we refurbish certified pre-owned electric bikes, we do not repair frames. If your frame is damaged, you will need to find another way to sell it. Here are the reasons that Upway will reject a used bike:

  • Damaged Frame: As stated above, if a frame is cracked, twisted, or generally broken, Upway will not accept it.

  • Missing Core Components: If a bike is incomplete and missing something like its original battery, charger, keys, or something else, Upway and other bike shops might not take it.

  • Custom/Modified e-Bikes: DIY electric bikes or bikes with serious modification will likely not be accepted due to the difficulty of finding parts. The bike must be a factory-manufactured model.

  • Old Bikes: All bikes sold to Upway must be manufactured after the 2017 model year to be accepted by Upway. We only take reputable brands from this model year forward to make it possible to find parts in the refurbishing process.

What should I do with a cracked frame?

If a frame is cracked, the options become limited. Unless you can find someone who is super excited to fix a broken frame, you need to get creative to get some cash for it. Here are some routes you can take:

  • Strip it: If the frame is no longer of any retail value, you might as well take all the stuff that is valuable off it. Strip all of the bike’s components off and sell them individually to maximize profit.

  • Sell as Parts Bike: If you don’t want to take apart the bike yourself and sell everything individually, you can go to Facebook Marketplace, Facebook groups, or another online space and sell your bike as a whole for its parts.

  • Check the Warranty: Before you sell your bike for parts or get rid of it, see if it has an active warranty. If it does, you might be able to get a replacement.

What does Upway accept?

Upway will purchase a factory-manufactured electric bike that is in working condition and comes with its original electrical components. We perform a 50-point inspection on all bikes. During this process, we make sure that the frame is not structurally compromised and that all core components are in working condition. We check for the original battery and charger and make sure that no serious modifications have been done.

Fill out a form and tell us about your bike, and we will get back to you with a cash offer within 48 hours. You have 14 days to decide if you want to accept an offer. When you do, we will help you ship your bike with a free box or arrange for it to be picked up. If you live in Los Angeles or New York City, you can even drop it off in person. Once we have your bike, you will receive a fast and secure cash payment directly into your bank account along with $150 in store credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do many places reject broken frames?

Broken frames are either impossible to fix or the price of fixing them is not worth it. Usually, you are better off selling the working parts of the bike separately.

Why doesn’t Upway buy custom bikes?

Upway only accepts factory models of bikes because during the refurbishing process, we need to be able to find parts that properly fit the bike.

Who will buy bike parts?

The best way to sell parts is usually Facebook Marketplace or eBay. Selling locally gets the edge because you can show the buyer in person that the parts work.

Key Takeaways

  1. Broken frames are hard to sell: Once your frame breaks, your bike is much harder to sell as a whole bike, and its resale value plummets. Focus on the working parts and leverage them to make some cash.
  2.  Double-check the warranty: Sometimes a warranty can get you a complete replacement for a broken frame, fixing your problem entirely.
  3.  Sell your intact electric bikes to Upway: A bike that is sold to Upway does not have to be perfect. As long as it has an intact frame and working battery, we will take a look at it if it is from a reputable brand. Upway will give you cash and store credit for your used bike.
