Can I Sell an Electric Bike Without the Original Charger?

Upway doesn’t accept electric bikes without a charger. When selling your used bike to us, it’s essential that the battery, charger, and any battery keys are included.  

If you’re selling privately or peer-to-peer, however, not having the electric bike’s charger can be okay. Plenty of e-Bikes get sold without their original charger, and it's not always a dealbreaker for all buyers, but you need to know the consequences.

A charger isn't an optional accessory, the way a bell or a phone mount is. Without one, the bike is essentially unusable until the buyer gets a replacement, which makes an e-Bike without one less desirable to buy second-hand.

Lithium-ion e-Bike batteries aren't interchangeable with generic chargers the way a phone charger might be. Each charger is built to match a specific battery's voltage, usually 24V, 36V, or 48V, along with a specific connector type and a charging profile that communicates with the battery's management system.

Using the wrong charger isn't just about it not fitting, as a mismatched voltage can overcharge or undercharge the battery. On top of this, a charger that doesn't shut off correctly can create a slow overcharge that builds heat hours after it's been unplugged. That's why UL 2849, the main e-Bike safety standard, tests the charger along with the battery and motor, not as a separate accessory.

A few brands, Bosch among them, build their batteries to be interchangeable across different capacities within their own ecosystems, making it easier to find a compatible charger. Unfortunately, most brands don't offer that flexibility, so a missing charger on a less common bike can be tough to replace.

Buyers see a missing charger as one of two things: either it got lost through bad luck, or it's a sign the bike wasn't looked after carefully. Neither assumption helps your asking price, and the second one can make cautious buyers walk away.

There's an actual cost, too. Depending on the brand, a new electric bike battery charger can run anywhere from affordable to surprisingly expensive if it's a proprietary part with limited availability.

Your best bet is to find the exact make and model of charger your bike came with. You can do this either straight from the manufacturer or through an authorized seller.

If you can't find one, a third-party charger can work, but only if the voltage, connector type, and charging profile match your battery exactly, though it’s still not generally recommended. Check the battery's label or the manufacturer's documentation carefully before you buy anything, because guessing based on the connector shape alone will get you a charger that plugs in fine but shouldn't be trusted.

If you've gone the third-party route, say so when you list the bike. Buyers would rather know upfront than find out later, and it saves you an argument if the charger turns out not to be quite right.

Selling an electric bike privately without a charger is something you'll have to deal with. Buyers will certainly ask about it, and some will walk away instead of bothering to find a replacement themselves.

Lead with the missing charger. Don't let a buyer find out halfway through a conversation. Say if the battery still holds a charge and how you checked, since a working battery with no charger is a completely different situation from one you've never tested at all.

If you have a replacement, even a third-party one, include the brand, voltage, and where you bought it. If you don't have one, say that plainly instead of letting a buyer assume they are getting the original.

Make sure you take clear photos, state mileage and condition honestly, and gather whatever service history you can dig up. These go a long way toward making up for the gap left by a missing charger.
