What Is The Santa Cruz Heckler?

The Santa Cruz Heckler is an absolute beast of an off-road full-suspension e-Bike. It’s not your general trail bike to scoot around on. This is designed for tough trail and all-mountain riding, technical climbs, big descents, and epic enduro trails. It’s the e-Bike for those ready for a thrill and to really get free of their comfort zone. Here’s why it excels:

  • Legendary Santa Cruz frame quality
  • Shimano motor.
  • Confidence-inspiring geometry
  • Excellent suspension
  • Mixed-wheel setup (where applicable)
  • Incredible climbing ability
  • Stable at speed
  • Built to handle rough terrain

The Santa Cruz Heckler Specification

In general, the Santa Cruz Heckler is a bike with great specifications. They use SRAM or Shimano drivetrains, with the best models being wireless shifting. The suspension comes only from FOX or RockShox, and you get 160mm travel up front and 150mm on the rear.

The carbon frame is not only light but also stiff, ensuring excellent power transfer. The wheel options, including the mixed, can help dial in the perfect feel for the rider. All this, along with a premium finishing kit with a dropper, there’s very little not to like. It’s far from a hardtail.

Motor And Battery

Santa Cruz has played it really smart with the motor and battery. They use the Shimano EP801 drive unit. With 85Nm of torque at your disposal, it’s the kind of bike that rips dust behind you, making you fast and look super cool at the same time.

The battery is 720 Wh, which is pretty standard for these motors. The range is 70 miles under ideal conditions. Honestly, take that with a massive pinch of salt. I would guess, as an expert, 30 to 50 with the standard system.

What's The Santa Cruz Heckler Like To Ride?

Now for the fun bit: let’s get away from specifications and talk about how it is to ride. Let’s break it down.

Climbing

On the Heckler, you’re going to get great traction on the climbs. Powerful e-MTB assistance to drag you up a hill with great torque in low-down cadence. The low-down weight and mid-drive motor really help plant it and improve stability. The lightness of this bike really improves its ability to get up hills.

Descending

With all the travel, the Heckler offers confidence-inspiring descending. It’s got the ability to get over big lumps but not too much that it becomes uncontrollable and too bouncy. I feel they could have gone with more travel, but it wouldn’t have made it better.

General Riding

The Heckler is a nice bike to ride, not just up and down hills but in general. It’s got a nice comfortable geometry, making all-day riding actually much more pleasurable. For me, this is really important, and companies often just focus on the extremes when I feel Santa Cruz has spent a lot of time looking at it overall.

When you're spending between $6,500 and $11,500, the expectations of what you are getting should be incredibly high. As far as the Heckler goes, it's got the value I would expect, and I feel it’s really fair. Santa Cruz is a premium brand, and compared to others, it’s more expensive but worth it if you love mountain biking.
