After 100 years in the business, Masi has seen it all. The Italian bike brand is celebrating its 100th birthday with a limited-edition bike, releasing only 100. Despite their recognition as a classic brand, Masi doesn’t live in the past. Their lineup is a unique mixture of classic steel bikes and modernly engineered performance bikes. They even have a monocoque carbon gravel bike

Masi’s history

100 years ago, Faliero Masi built his first frame. He started as a professional racer, then gained notoriety as one of the best bike makers in Milan. He created custom bikes for champion racers such as Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx. Masi is credited with evolving road cycling during this time. He made a more modern geometry to promote race positioning and invented an internal lug welding technique that greatly improved the durability of his bikes while lowering the weight.

In the 70s, Masi expanded to North America, opening a workshop in California. It was in this shop that the company began to innovate with steel. Haro Bikes now owns the US trademark of Masi, and the brand has expanded its lineup to include gravel and adventure bikes. Masi is unique in its diverse use of frame materials, leveraging the strengths of each to match the goals of each bike design.

Masi road bikes

Masi’s history and current popularity can be attributed to early road bike success. They were one of the first brands to develop lightweight road bikes, and saw success at the highest level. Today, they still make fast and light road bikes, but keep the classic feel that Masi riders love.

  • Masi Titanio: The Titanio is the flagship road bike in the modern Masi lineup. Made with a lightweight titanium frame, it blends the classic metal feel that Masi enthusiasts love with modern road cycling technology. The Titanio uses aerospace-grade titanium tubing for the frame and pairs with an ENVE carbon fiber fork for a lightweight and comfortable endurance road platform.

  • Masi Centenario: The Centenario was originally released 40 years ago for Masi’s 60th anniversary. It is back again for their 100th year in business. Masi only made 100 Centenario bikes for their 100th anniversary. It features a classic steel frame and uses signature Masi techniques like internal steel lugs and their steel butting process. Each frame is hand numbered and registered.

Masi off-road bikes

When Masi made the move to California, they had to appeal to local riders. California is a hotbed of off-road and adventure cycling. Now Masi is respected for their gravel bike designs and adventure models. A background in steel craftsmanship paid off when making bikes that need to be able to take a beating.

  • Masi Oltre Strada: The Oltre Strada is the bike that strays away from the traditional metal manufacturing we are used to seeing from Masi. This drop-bar gravel racer has a monocoque carbon fiber frame and an aerodynamic design, making it one of the more modern bikes in their lineup. It features a road-style cockpit with a slack headtube to combine speed and stability. The Oltre Strada can fit tires up to 2.1 inches wide, striking a balance between speed and capability.

  • Masi Incanto: The Incanto screams versatility. While it is typically seen as a gravel bike, its lightweight titanium frame makes it a strong candidate for an all-around road bike or all-road machine. The titanium frame paired with a gravel fork dissipates road vibrations and enhances handling.

  • Masi Giramondo: The Giramondo is all about adventure. Made as a backpacking and touring bike, this bike is made with durable steel and packed with everything you need for an adventure. It comes with front and rear racks, flat handlebars, and an upright geometry for a comfortable riding position. It is also packed with some of the most durable components on the market and ready to be loaded with cargo.

Who are Masi bikes for?

  • Road purists: As road bike technology progresses, some riders feel forced to switch to carbon fiber frames. If you are the type of rider who loves steel and titanium, Masi is a classic choice that remains fast today.

  • Adventure seekers: With the pivot to gravel, Masi is great for taking on the toughest roads and beyond. The brand’s metal-working expertise allows them to make some of the toughest frames on the market, which is great for long adventures.

  • Ride quality prioritizers: Comfort is often sacrificed for speed. If you are a daily rider who isn’t entering a stage race any time soon, you probably want a blend of performance and comfort. Masi provides the best of both worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Masi still an Italian company?

In the 1970’s when the Masi trademark split, the American side got rights to the brand name. The Italian workshop is still open and making bikes, but they use the name Milano 3V. The American brand is the only one using the Masi name.

What are the best Masi bikes for racing?

The Strada Oltre is their carbon fiber gravel bike, which is packed with aero features and a lightweight frame. The Titanio is also a good choice for longer road races or criteriums.

Why did Masi switch to gravel?

Gravel skyrocketed in popularity, and that popularity is even larger in California, where Masi is located. Masi decided to keep making their flagship road bike while getting more into the gravel game.
