Mahle X35 E-Bike Motor Issues

A small controller, called the iWoc, handles communication between the battery, the pedal-assist sensor, and the motor. Everything runs through the MAHLE MySmartBike app, which shows battery charge, assist level, and any error codes.

Lights on the controller button double as a basic status display. A solid or flashing pink light generally means something’s wrong, though the exact meaning depends on the pattern and if an error code shows up in the app.

The PAS sensor (pedal assist sensor) is also known as the PASS sensor on Mahle models. Failures with this sensor are the most common problem with the Mahle X35. When you get an issue, it usually gives you error code 35.

When you get a PAS sensor problem, you'll still be able to move the bike. If you hold the button down, it will creep forward under power on its own. But it won’t assist your pedaling, and sometimes there's no error code at all; it just cuts out mid-ride. Quite often, water will cause this error. A ride in wet weather or washing the bike can cause the assistance to stop working. It might work again the next time you ride, then frustratingly fail the same way the time after that.

There’s a magnetic ring on the rear cassette that sits right next to the sensor, and dirt or grime can build up around it, causing the same problem. Cleaning it can sometimes fix PAS problems, at least for a while. If the fault keeps coming back after wet rides specifically, that usually means water has worked its way into the sensor housing, so your bike will probably need a new sensor.

The PAS sensor isn't the only thing that can go wrong on a Mahle X35 motor system. Less often, the battery management system can lose its connection to the rest of the bike. When that happens, you'll usually notice a few symptoms, such as the battery staying stuck on one charge percentage no matter how much you ride. The serial number may show up as garbled data, and the motor can go into protective mode, where power delivery becomes jerky and stutters instead of running smoothly due to intermittent power.

None of that means the battery itself is dead. Every e-Bike battery has a BMS (battery management system), a small circuit that tracks things like charge level and cell health and reports them back to the bike. Here, the Bluetooth control board can still send speed commands to the motor; it just can't read the BMS data.

That's worth knowing, as it means the fault is in the connection between the board and the BMS, not the battery cells themselves, so you might not need a full battery replacement.

Whether you have a sensor or battery fault, you won’t be able to fix it yourself. Mahle built the X35 system closed off from end users, so you can’t run your own diagnostics, install firmware yourself, do a software upgrade, or buy the same connector leads a shop uses. Even something as simple as swapping a PAS sensor means sourcing the exact part and connector a shop would use.

You're not stuck with your bike brand's dealer network though. Any shop with mechanics who know Mahle or Ebikemotion hub motors can usually order parts, run diagnostics, and do firmware updates.

Most of the cost on a fault like this comes from diagnosing the problem, not replacing parts. An intermittent problem that only shows up after certain rides takes a shop a lot of time to pin down, and that labor adds up faster than the cost of the sensor or cable itself.

Check your warranty status before paying for diagnostics. If the bike's still covered, that cost usually falls on the manufacturer or dealer, not you.
