Step-thru e-Bikes make it easier to get on and off and that can make a big difference for many riders. But the step-thru design isn’t universal— there is a variety of frame shapes along with other features to consider when searching for the right model. In this article, I’ll guide you step by step through how to choose an electric bike. See what I did there…

What is a step-thru electric bike?

Step-thru bikes have a frame that swoops down in the middle, allowing the rider to simply step through the frame and mount the bike. The more grammatically astute among us may refer to these as “step-through” bikes— tomato, tomato.

The shape of bike frames is typically referred to as "step-thru" or "step-over", highlighting how riders can mount the bike. If you’re not sure if step-thru frames are right for you, I recently explained the difference between open frames vs closed frames.

Step-thru frames: This design features a low crossbar in the middle of the bike, allowing riders to step through effortlessly for easy mounting. Sometimes referred to as “open frame” bikes.

Step-over frames: Often referred to as "high-step" or simply a standard frame, this design includes a high crossbar (called the top tube), creating a closed triangular frame shape. As a result, riders must lift their legs higher to get on the bike.

Advantages of a step through e-Bike

  • Ease of mounting: The swooping frame means you only have to slightly lift your leg to step through and mount the bike. This is especially helpful for riders with limited mobility.

  • Cargo-carrying convenience: Many cargo e-Bikes have a step-thru design so riders can mount the bike more safely. Not having to swing your leg high over the frame means you can keep the bike balanced and avoid tipping over, especially when it’s loaded up with heavy cargo.

  • Lower standover height: It’s easier to dismount a step-thru frame after coming to a stop and can avoid unpleasant impacts in the nether regions in case of a sudden stop. Many models are designed to allow the rider to place their feet comfortably on the ground when stopped. The low crossbar also makes it easier to pedal the bike if you’re wearing a skirt or dress.

Step-thru vs. mid-step frames

“Step-thru” is an umbrella term that refers to any bike that has a standover height that’s lower than normal, but there’s plenty of variety. For example, bikes that split the difference between a standard “step-over” frame and a low, swooping frame have “mid-step” frames. You’ll still need to lift your leg to mount the bike, but not quite as high as traditional frames. Gazelle offers its popular Medeo hybrid e-Bike in both step-thru and mid-step models.

You may notice that most step-through electric bikes don’t have quite as low frames as standard bicycles. The motor, battery, and controller of e-Bikes are typically housed around this area and add a bit of bulk around the area, but the difference is very slight.

If you are searching for an ultra-low frame, e-Bikes like the Pedego Boomerang Platinum Edition go above and beyond. The frame dips as low as possible to help riders with limited mobility get on comfortably.

Additional considerations

But when it comes to step-thru e-Bikes, there’s more than just frame shape to consider. To choose the most suitable model, think about additional factors such as stability, riding comfort, and convenient accessories that will take your ride to the next level.

Mounting ease and stability

Step-thru bikes typically skew toward the recreation end of the spectrum, prioritizing comfort and stability. Beyond the easy-to-mount frame, additional features may include wide tires, swept-back handlebars, and a long wheelbase. Beach cruisers are a great example of this kind of design, offering a stable ride that’s a breeze to use. Not all riders need ultra-wide tires, but fat tire e-Bike can offer even more of a stable and cushy ride.

Comfortable riding position

You can expect a comfortable riding experience on step-thru bikes, mostly due to the upright sitting position and ergonomic handlebars that open up the upper body. Certain models even come with comfort-enhancing add-ons like a suspension seatpost, ergonomic grips, and plush seats.

But, of course, the bike needs to fit you well. Many step-thru models embrace a one-size-fits-all design to accommodate a range of rider heights. Upway makes it easy to shop for a step through e-Bike based on your exact height and see the recommended rider height of every model page.

Convenient e-Bike accessories

Think of your step-thru e-Bike as a blank canvas ready for customization. It likely already comes with handy e-Bike accessories like integrated lights, a rear rack, or fenders, but there are even more options to make your bike truly unique. Trick out your electric city bike with a phone mount, baskets, bags, and a heavy-duty lock!

Key Takeaways

  1. Step-thru e-Bikes prioritize accessibility and comfort: Their low crossbar design makes mounting and dismounting easier, especially for riders with mobility concerns or those carrying cargo.
  2. Not all step-thru frames are the same: Mid-step frames offer a compromise between step-thru and step-over designs, while some ultra-low frames cater specifically to riders needing extra accessibility.
  3. Additional features enhance the ride: Stability, an ergonomic riding position, and accessories like racks, lights, and suspension seatposts can make your step-thru e-Bike even more convenient and comfortable.
