National Bike Month is here. Every May, the hum of spinning wheels joins the buzz of spring as bikes and e-Bikes take over streets, trails, and commutes.

There’s a certain buzz this time of year, perhaps from spring finally warming up, bees zooming by, or the familiar whiz of fancy bicycle hubs. I like to think that the official reason is because May is National Bike Month!

Upway treats every month like National Bike Month, but this designated calendar slot helps spread the word about cycling and a few special nationwide events. In this article, celebrate National Bike Month by learning a bit more about the celebration and how cycling is on the rise in the US.

National Bike Month 2025

May rings in National Bike Month every year and has done so since the cycling celebration was established back in 1956. The League of American Bicyclists sponsors National Bike Month and promotes the event, showcasing the benefits of bicycling and encouraging more folks to give biking a try.

National Ride a Bike Day

This year, National Ride a Bike Day falls on May 4th— you may recognize that date as the famous “May the Fourth” Star Wars celebration, too. 2025 marks only the fourth year this day has been celebrated, but it looks like it’ll be sticking around! There’s also a World Bicycle Day, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, that’s celebrated every year on June 3rd across the globe.

Bike to Work Week

One of the most well-known elements of National Bike Month is Bike to Work Week, held during the third week of May. This year, Bike to Work Week 2025 will take place May 12-18. Schools, companies, community groups, and local governments often launch campaigns to encourage people to cycle to work.

I’ve even been part of competitions where teams see who rides the highest mileage by the end of the week, in hot anticipation of prizes. You may see pop-up tents at busy bike spots in your city offering morning coffee, snacks, or promoting cycling stuff— it’s a fun vibe. Check with your local bike advocacy group or keep an eye out for events hosted in your area, especially if you want those free bananas and energy bars.

Bike to Work Day

Bike to Work Day is always scheduled on the Friday of Bike to Work Week, celebrating the end of the exciting week and encouraging commuters to get out at least once before the weekend. This year, it falls on May 16th.

Cycling in the US is growing

And there’s big reason to celebrate National Bike Month— cycling in the US is on the rise. According to a recent PeopleForBikes report, 2024 saw 112 million people— representing 35% of the population aged three and up— ride a bike at least once. This marks the highest participation rate since tracking began back in 2014. The largest surge was in youth cycling, climbing from 49% to 56% and indicating positive trends for the younger generation of cyclists.

I recently wrote a report about e-Bike hotspots in the US— cities where bike ridership is growing the fastest— which included New York City, Chicago, the Twin Cities, and San Francisco. There’s been significant growth in both urban bike-share use and personal e-Bikes as cities continue to become more bike-friendly.

Places like LA and NYC are on the right track and are dreaming of cutting air pollution levels like we’ve seen in Paris with the French capital’s strong commitment to bike lanes and car traffic restrictions. If you want to dive deeper in the data about cycling in the US, explore the League of American Bicyclists’ extensive research to find facts about bicycle commuting in your city or state.
