Never trust a restaurant that has a menu with a million things on it. Even worse, if they give you one of those booklets with more pages than you can count. There’s simply no way the restaurant can cook all of those dishes well— or, at least, they’d make better food if they focused on a smaller selection.

And I think Trek knows this. My hunch is that Trek is taking a smart approach to road electric bikes, providing just a handful of curated options, all of which are worthy of a great Yelp review. To be sure, the global bike brand makes a ton of bikes (in this sense, Trek’s overall menu is one of the biggest) but the road e-Bike list sticks to just one model: the Domane+. It’s available in several versions for plenty of choice when it comes to frame material and components.

At the moment, Trek doesn’t even have a dedicated gravel electric bike— but considering the Domane+ can fit tires up to 40mm, it can easily double as a rugged gravel machine. I’ll dive into the details of the carbon fiber Domane+ and the aluminum version. Enjoy this brief tasting menu of Trek’s best road electric bikes and I hope it whets your appetite for road riding. After all, sometimes less is more.

Trek Domane+ SLR

The Trek Domane+ SLR is a carbon fiber racing bike with a powerful motor and top-level specs. The SLR abbreviation stands for Super Light Race, referring to the impressive weight savings and performance-oriented design. Similar to the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Neo, this fancy road e-Bike would go lightning fast even without a motor, so you can trust that you’ve got the most efficient and smoothest pedal assist out there.

The SLR model is powered by an innovative TQ harmonic ring pin motor positioned between the cranks. It’s the same motor that debuted on the lightweight e-MTB Trek EXe, offering impressive power without the heft. The mid-drive motor is rated at 250W with 50nm of torque, hooked up to a 360Wh battery inside the downtube.

There are a few versions available for the Domane+ SLR depending on your groupset preferences, including an option for electronic shifting. Each version boasts Trek’s most advanced 800 Series OCLV Carbon fiber frame and there’s room for tires up to 40mm, meaning you can fit gravel tires without a problem. Can you believe the Domane+ SLR only weighs 27 lb.? Wild. For the weight weenies and riders who want the absolute best, this carbon model doesn’t cut a single corner.

Trek Domane+ AL

The Domane+ AL strikes the right balance between efficiency and value. A lot of riders doubt the real need for an ultra-high-end e-Bike like the Domane+ SLR— after all, the motor trumps any aero, weight, or efficiency concerns. You might say the Trek Domane+ AL is the road e-Bike of the people, ideal for roadies who desire a bit of a boost. It’s a model that Upway has seen come through our doors quite often, and we dig it.

If you haven’t guessed already, the AL in the model name refers to the aluminum alloy frame. It's a durable material that still achieves lightweight specs— the entire e-Bike comes in at a slim 31 lb. The Domane+ AL is powered by a Hyena 250W rear hub motor with 40Nm of torque. This way, you can easily crush hills or keep up with stronger riders without completing bonking, not that you were doing that before, of course.

The intuitive and natural-feeling boost is a huge advantage of this model. The 38mm tire clearance is generous, but not as wide as that of an electric off road bike if you want to explore chunkier gravel routes. The Domane+ AL is a more accessible e-Bike that dominates the road ahead.

Key Takeways

  1. Streamlined Options: Trek focuses on the Domane+ for road e-bikes, offering high-performance carbon (SLR) and value-driven aluminum (AL) models.
  2. Domane+ SLR: Lightweight (27 lb.) with a carbon frame, advanced TQ motor, and 40mm tire clearance for road and gravel versatility.
  3. Domane+ AL: Durable aluminum frame, 250W rear hub motor, and 38mm tire clearance for reliable, affordable performance.
