Top 10 Tips for Riding a Road e-Bike

1. Prioritize fit and comfort

Nothing is cooler than having a road bike that fits you properly. Road cycling can be rife with fashion-over-function trends, but even the pros obsess over achieving the right fit and highest levels of comfort possible. For us mere mortals, staying comfy in the saddle is important to preventing injury and enjoying each mile.

Start with the correct frame size for your measurements and zero in on the perfect seat height. You can also play around with headset spacers, stem length, and saddle position to alter the stack and reach numbers, or find whatever feels right. Don’t hesitate to install a suspension seat post or extra-cushy bar tape to absorb road buzz.

2. Stay safe around cars

Riding on the road means you’ll be sharing the lanes with cars. While I’m not a big fan of cars, I don’t consider them to be my archnemeses either, and think we can coexist. Cyclists typically have the right of way so it’s the car’s job to respect your space, but there are a few things you can do to increase your safety. Ride predictably and use hand signals to indicate your next move. Wearing highly visible clothing and bright front and rear lights (even during the day!) will help you stay seen out on the road.

3. Get padded bib shorts

Okay, I get it… for the uninitiated, wearing padded bib shorts or other form-fitting cycling apparel can seem daunting or just straight-up weird. But trust me, it’s worth it and you’ll end up wondering how you ever rode without this bike-specific clothing.

Now, I’m not the fashion police and you should ride in whatever you feel most comfortable, but I’m 100% sure you’ll reduce the chance of a sore bum by wearing padded bib shorts. There are tons of models and styles available, and you can expand your wardrobe to cycling jerseys and funky-colored socks. There’s a lot more out there these days than the neon Lycra of yesteryear. Bike shorts even became a mainstream fashion trend for non-cyclists! Give them a try… your butt will thank you.

4. Wear a helmet, always

Wearing a helmet is a must, especially when sharing the road with cars or riding a fast electric bike. Helmets do more than just protect your noggin— they are a cool fashion statement and can help keep light rain sprinkles off your head too. Do yourself a solid and always ride with proper head protection.

5. Nutrition is key

Exploring the road on an electric bike means you can go faster and farther than before, so it’s a good idea to have enough snacks and water. Riding an electric bike is still serious exercise and you don’t want to be caught out “bonking” in the middle of a ride with no way to get your energy levels back up. Stash a few bars, gels, or homemade snacks in your jersey pocket or saddle bag, and make sure you have a couple of water bottles.

6. Find others to ride with

Road cycling is enjoyable solo but is much more fun in a group. Long flat stretches and painful climbs are much more palatable with a few riding mates to talk to and encourage each other. You’ll discover new routes and make new friends, and that mid- or post-ride coffee stop is a buzzing social meeting. If your cycling buddies are faster than you, road e-Bikes make it easy to keep up with stronger riders.

7. Try clipless pedals

Despite the odd name, clipless cycling shoes actually clip into the pedals (replacing the traditional toe clips and straps). And just like padded bike shorts, these special shoes can be a major upgrade to your riding experience. Being clipped into and having your feet attached to the bike can feel like a weird concept, but it encourages more efficient and comfortable pedaling. They’ll take some getting used to and every roadie will fall once or twice at the beginning, but you’ll fall in love with clipless pedals.

8. Understand your e-Bike’s pedal assist levels

Have a good understanding of the pedal assist modes of your road e-Bike in order to optimize your battery range and riding experience. Some models even allow you to customize each pedal assist level if you require more or less power. Riding in the lower levels means you’ll have to work a bit more but you’ll save battery and can enjoy longer range. The toggle switch is there to be used, so there’s no need to stick to a single pedal assist level as you ride.

9. Master cornering techniques

Cornering on a road bike requires a bit more attention since their narrow tires mean there’s less grippy rubber making contact with the pavement. Compared to an eMTB or other electric off-road bike, road bike tires are significantly skinnier. Avoid braking during a corner and brake well before the turn instead. Some e-Bike riders delay their acceleration out of a corner slightly to avoid the motor engaging while the bike is still in the corner, which could throw off handling.

10. Optimize your cadence

Electric bike motors work together with a rider’s own pedaling power to provide a natural-feeling boost. Pedaling at an optimal cadence of about 80-100 rpm will help keep you and your e-Bike’s motor operating in their ideal efficiency windows. Shifting to the right gear and maintaining a fluid cadence will help extend battery life and prevent the motor from overheating.
