Orbea Keram 30

I’ve got a soft spot for Orbea but I wouldn’t call it bias because the brand (one of the world’s oldest bicycle manufacturers) consistently delivers on performance and value. And it’s not just me that’s impressed. Orbea has road bikes in the UCI World Tour and professional mountain bikers depend on its e-MTBs to smash descents. The Orbea Keram 30 is a versatile hardtail for comfort and off-road prowess.

This hardtail e-Bike has a short-travel 80mm suspension fork to smooth out light terrain like flowy singletrack and dirt trails. That’s not enough travel for harder-hitting routes, but provides the right amount of shock absorption for commuters and recreational riders. The Keram rolls on big 29” wheels and is powered by a high-end Bosch Active Line mid-drive motor.

There’s buttery smooth acceleration, 40 Nm of torque, and a 400Wh battery. The unique motor and battery covers along the downtube effectively trick the eye and help slim down the appearance of the e-Bike. There’s no dropper post, but this Orbea e-MTB boasts an ultra-reliable motor and excellent value for trail riders.

Haibike HardNine 5

Manufactured by the German brand Haibike, the HardNine 5 is a capable 29er hardtail powered by a Bosch Performance Line mid-drive motor. A step up compared to the Orbea Keram, this model raises the suspension and motor specs. The suspension fork provides 120mm of travel for more authentic cross-country performance and the Bosch drive unit packs in higher torque.

Haibike (not to be confused with the lower-quality Heybike brand) makes several versions of this e-MTB with different wheel sizes and componentry specs, but the HardNine5 strikes a great balance. XC riders will enjoy the fast-rolling 29” wheels and the hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent stopping power on the trails.
