The fun part about electric mountain bikes (e-MTBs) is hitting the trails and soaring up climbs. The not-so-fun part is the sky-high prices of many models out there. Taking into account the powerful motors, advanced suspension, and rugged components, it makes sense that e-MTBs often cost more than other types of electric bikes, but there are excellent rides on a budget if you know where to look.

Best e-MTBs Under $1,500

Orbea Keram 30

Orbea Keram 30 electric hardtail mountain bike

I’ve got a soft spot for Orbea but I wouldn’t call it bias because the brand (one of the world’s oldest bicycle manufacturers) consistently delivers on performance and value. And it’s not just me that’s impressed. Orbea has road bikes in the UCI World Tour and professional mountain bikers depend on its e-MTBs to smash descents. The Orbea Keram 30 is a versatile hardtail for comfort and off-road prowess.

This hardtail e-Bike has a short-travel 80mm suspension fork to smooth out light terrain like flowy singletrack and dirt trails. That’s not enough travel for harder-hitting routes, but provides the right amount of shock absorption for commuters and recreational riders. The Keram rolls on big 29” wheels and is powered by a high-end Bosch Active Line mid-drive motor.

There’s buttery smooth acceleration, 40 Nm of torque, and a 400Wh battery. The unique motor and battery covers along the downtube effectively trick the eye and help slim down the appearance of the e-Bike. There’s no dropper post, but this Orbea e-MTB boasts an ultra-reliable motor and excellent value for trail riders.

Haibike HardNine 5

Haibike HardNine 5 electric hardtail mountain bike

Manufactured by the German brand Haibike, the HardNine 5 is a capable 29er hardtail powered by a Bosch Performance Line mid-drive motor. A step up compared to the Orbea Keram, this model raises the suspension and motor specs. The suspension fork provides 120mm of travel for more authentic cross-country performance and the Bosch drive unit packs in higher torque.

Haibike
(not to be confused with the lower-quality Heybike brand) makes several versions of this e-MTB with different wheel sizes and componentry specs, but the HardNine5 strikes a great balance. XC riders will enjoy the fast-rolling 29” wheels and the hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent stopping power on the trails. The Haibike HardNine 5 is a solid all-rounder built for XC terrain, available at a steep discount on Upway.

Price: $1,549 ($3,185 new) Savings of 51%

Aventon Aventure.2

Aventon Aventure electric hardtail mountain bike

The Aventon brand is never too far from the action and the updated Aventure.2 model made its way onto this list as a good option for recreational riders looking for an all-terrain e-Bike. The Aventure.2 features 26x4” fat tires that are larger than what’s typically found on a hardtail mountain bike. The model is designed for stability, comfort, and control over loose terrain rather than purebred performance.

This second-generation model comes with a new torque sensor for more responsive acceleration, as well as integrated turn signals and reported improved range. The original Aventon Aventure is an Upway best-seller and is priced even more competitively if you’re on the hunt for a more affordable electric bike. Unlike other models on this list, the Aventure.2 has a 750W rear hub motor and can be ridden in pedal-assist or throttle modes up to 20 mph.

Price: $1,349 ($1,999 new) Savings of 33%
