It’s not often I get to review a bike that really surprises me, but that’s exactly what the new Aventon Current has done. Being Aventon’s first proper full-suspension e-MTB, I didn’t really know what to expect. Was it going to be a half-effort, or a complete industry shift?

In this article, I’m going to tell you all you need to know. The good, the bad, and the ugly truth about this bike. This could be the best thing since sliced bread or a completely uncooked mess made by the apprentice baker.

What is Aventon?


Aventon was started in 2012 by JW Zhang. It actually started out as a fixed-gear urban bike brand, but soon went electric in 2018. Although a fairly new company in the electric bike industry, they have definitely made a huge name for themselves very quickly.

They focus on quality, cost, and function above all else, and the designs are really sleek. They mainly focus on a wide range of bike types, with various models and specifications. Here’s some you can expect to see.

  • Commuters (Aventon Level)
  • Fat bikes (Aventon Aventure)
  • Gravel/e-MTB style (Aventon Ramblas)
  • Urban bikes (Aventon Soltera)

This is a lot of their current lineup. I didn’t expect to one day be adding an e-MTB to this, especially one such as the Current, which is an off-road beast on paper.

The Current has two different specification levels. The ADV, which is the aluminum, more budget version, and the EXP, which is the all-singing, all-dancing carbon fiber model.

Aventon Current's New Mid-Drive Motor


Does The Aventon Current Have A Power Plant Or AA Batteries? I can’t stress enough that Aventon has really stepped up to the plate when it comes to performance on the Current. Using their own Ultro X mid-drive motor, which was designed in conjunction with Gobao, a motor manufacturer, but Aventon fine-tunes it for their bikes.

The motor and battery are definitely a power plant. With 120Nm max torque, a 750-watt motor (850 watts max), and a large 800Wh battery, it’s ready to go, and with the whole bike only weighing 53lbs, it’s not a heavy setup either. It’s right up there with the Bosch and Shimano motors of the bike world.

They claim a 105-mile range, which I'd say is about right, but I don’t quite believe it for real-world use. Maybe on flat terrain in perfect weather, but not as this bike is designed to be ridden. It’s important to understand that this is new technology and still unproven in long-term use.

Do the Components and Their Abilities Match the Specifications?


One of my biggest concerns about Aventon making an e-MTB was that we’d give it all the power but no ability. With Rockshox Lyrik Select 150mm travel upfront and a Rockshox Super Deluxe shock to cover you on the rear, it’s actually really good, and they really have gone budget here.

The same goes for the gearing: using an SRAM S1000 transmission means great electronic shifting, but it also charges off the main motor, which is a very impressive integration for a bike.

You also get some great smart features. The Current keeps you connected via 4 G to help you customize your bike and how it works, track airtime and jump data, and even offers GPS tracking and theft alerts. Oh, and a compass of all things.

How Much Is The Aventon Current?


Current sits in a more premium bracket, with the basic version, the Current ADV, at $4,000 and the Current EXP at $6,000. Not budget by any means, but the value for money is there, and compared to a Specialized or a Giant, it's very good value and very justifiable.

My final thoughts on the Aventon Current are that I think it’s excellent, but for Aventon, it’s a very new product that is completely different from what they are used to, so I’m interested to see how it holds up in the long term.

Is the Aventon Current better than the Specialized Turbo Levo?
The Turbo Levo has years of development behind it, but the Current offers incredible specifications, more torque, smart security features, and excellent value for money. It's just new and currently unproven.
