Burbank offers a more varied e-Bike commuting environment compared to flatter parts of Los Angeles. Here, it’s about balancing fast commutes downtown with access to hills, parks, and longer routes into neighbouring areas like Glendale and beyond.

What kind of electric bike is best suited to Burbank?

Burbank riding is a mix of urban commuting, moderate distances, and access to nearby recreational areas like Griffith Park, Franklin Canyon Park, and neighboring Glendale. Often referred to as the Media Capital of the World, Burbank combines busy city streets with quick access to nature and hills.

Downtown Burbank sits in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, so while there are flatter sections ideal for easy commuting, you don’t have to go far before you hit elevation.

Head into Griffith Park for more recreational activities, and the riding becomes noticeably more demanding. Expect long, gradual climbs, short punchy hills, and sustained elevation gain, especially if you’re riding up towards viewpoints overlooking the Hollywood Sign. This makes Burbank a more varied riding environment than a typical flat urban area.

This means that a practical, yet slightly more versatile e-Bike is usually the best option.

E-Bike class options

Class 1 and Class 2 electric bikes are ideal for most riders. They’re permitted on bike paths and roads and provide enough power for quick acceleration and smooth cruising around town or inevitable commuting between studios.

If your riding includes longer commutes or more road-based travel between areas like Burbank and Glendale, a Class 3 e-Bike can also be a good option to help reduce journey times.

Electric bike type

City bikes and hybrid e-Bikes work well for everyday commuting, but given the proximity to hills, park routes, and light off-road terrain, a slightly more rugged hybrid or hardtail e-Bike with good gearing and torque will give you added flexibility.

If you’re running errands or transporting kids, a mid-drive-motor cargo e-Bike (with high torque ratings and engineered power) still makes a lot of sense. However, this will suffice for moving around Glendale and Burbank (flat and elevated sections), but these bikes may not be suitable for the rugged terrain, steep inclines, and switchbacks found in Griffith Park.

Is there a one-size-fits-all bike for Burbank?

Burbank is a district of extremes. It has flat, moderately hilly, and steep rugged terrain all within close proximity.

Your one-size-fits-all electric bike would need to look slick and professional for urban commuting and errands (with the ability to negotiate Burbank foothills), but also have fat-tire robustness and the ability to handle steeper inclines.

The Aventon Aventure 3 comes close; it looks sharp on city streets but can handle steeper climbs. Alternatively, the Aventon Level looks more like a traditional city bike and can still handle climbs, but won’t offer the same comfort and stability as a fat tire option.

I was faced with a similar dilemma once, and I have to admit, I couldn’t find a one-size-fits-all. So for me, the best solution was to buy a robust city bike for daily riding and then hire bikes better suited to off-road, hilly weekend adventures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the local traffic laws around riding electric bikes in Burbank?

California follows a three-class system:

Class 1: Pedal assist up to 20 mph

Class 2: Throttle-assisted up to 20 mph

Class 3: Pedal assist up to 28 mph

Class 1 and 2 bikes are generally allowed on bike paths and roads, while Class 3 bikes are typically restricted to road use and bike lanes.

Should I buy a used electric bike without a warranty?

I’d generally avoid it unless the price is very low and you’re comfortable taking a risk, or you know how to evaluate technical equipment like this (which I don’t). The expensive parts on an e-bike, like the battery, motor, and electronics, can fail, and repairs aren’t cheap.

A better option is a professionally refurbished bike with at least a short warranty. That way, you get better value for money while still having some protection if something goes wrong.

What warranty can I expect on a used electric bike?

Typically, 6 to 12 months if you buy from a reputable refurbished seller, covering key parts like the battery and motor. Private sales usually come with no warranty, so you’re taking on more risk.
