Tern has been at the forefront of modern electric cargo bikes for well over a decade, and the GSD has become one of the benchmark longtail cargo e-Bikes. Rather than focusing on outright speed, it's designed to carry children, shopping and everyday essentials safely, comfortably and efficiently.

Powered by Bosch's proven Performance Line motor and supported by a huge range of accessories, the Tern GSD has become a favorite with families looking to replace car journeys with cycling.

In this review, I look at the Tern GSD's motor performance, carrying capacity, range, practicality, storage, value for money and who I think this premium cargo bike is best suited for.

What motor does the Tern GSD have and is it powerful enough for the job?

The Tern GSD cargo bike is powered by the Bosch Performance Line mid-drive motor, delivering up to 65 Nm of torque and 250 watts of continuous pedal assistance. This powerful mid-drive motor provides smooth, natural power delivery, which is particularly important on a Class 1 cargo bike where riders rely solely on pedal assistance rather than a throttle.

According to Tern's specifications, the GSD can carry a maximum payload of 210 kg (463 lb), making it capable of transporting a rider, two small children (or one adult passenger) and a full load of shopping with ease.

The lack of a Class 2 throttle does mean you'll need to put in a little more effort when pulling away, climbing steep hills or tackling longer commutes. However, the Bosch motor's high torque and efficient power delivery make carrying heavy loads surprisingly manageable.

Is the Tern GSD a good cargo bike?

Let's face it, cargo bikes are less about style and much more about substance. They're the station wagons of the e-Bike world and should be judged on how much they can carry, how comfortably they do it, and how practical they are for everyday life.

Power

As mentioned above, the Bosch motor provides the Tern GSD with up to 400% pedal assistance, enabling riders to comfortably haul an adult, two children and a week's shopping through commutes, school runs and daily errands.

In practical terms, that means even when you're carrying the maximum 220 lb rear rack load, it can feel more like pedalling around 40 lb, rather than hauling hundreds of pounds under your own steam.

Distance

Range will naturally vary depending on the battery configuration, terrain and the amount of cargo you're carrying, but Tern estimates between 63 and 89 miles on a single charge.

In theory, that could get the average short-distance commuter through an entire working week without recharging. Realistically though, this feels like the sort of bike most owners would top up two or three times a week, particularly if they're regularly carrying passengers or heavy loads.

Cargo

The Tern GSD has a maximum payload of 463 lb, which includes the bike, rider, passengers, accessories and cargo. The standard rear rack alone can carry up to 220 lb, making it ideal for transporting children, heavy grocery shops or even bulky DIY supplies.

The wider Tern ecosystem also scores highly, with accessories including child seats, pet carriers, trailer adapters, bike-towing accessories and the excellent Cargo Hold 52 Waterproof Panniers, allowing owners to tailor the bike to almost any family or utility role.

Size and fit

Despite its cargo-carrying capability, the Tern GSD is  remarkably adjustable. Both the handlebar and saddle height can be quickly altered, allowing the bike to comfortably fit riders from 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 7 in (150–201 cm) and up to 287 lb (130 kg). The low-step frame also makes mounting and dismounting much easier, especially when the bike is fully loaded.

Storage

This is where the Tern GSD really stands out. When most people think of a cargo bike, they picture something bulky that's a nightmare to store. Tern has cleverly solved that problem by designing the GSD to park vertically, allowing it to be stored upright against a wall—ideal for homes and garages where space is limited.

It also features Vertical Rolling, allowing the bike to be wheeled easily while upright through tight spaces such as hallways, lifts and apartment corridors.

Finally, there's FlatFold mode, where the saddle can be fully lowered and the handlepost folded down, reducing the bike's footprint so it can fit into the boot of many SUVs or the back of a van. Smart, space-saving engineering.

Is the Tern GSD a good value cargo bike?

Yes, I think it is.

The Tern GSD isn't a budget cargo bike, and it's also not trying to be. It's designed to replace a second car for many families, handling school runs, grocery shopping, commuting and weekend adventures with ease. When you consider its exceptional carrying capacity, premium Bosch drive system, huge range of accessories and clever space-saving design, it's easy to see where the money goes.

Perhaps just as importantly, Tern bikes hold their value extremely well. Their reputation for quality, durability and reliability means there is strong demand for used models, helping owners recover a significant proportion of their investment when it's time to upgrade.

If you're looking to buy second-hand, Upway regularly stocks refurbished Tern GSD models at prices well below the cost of buying new. And if you already own one, the strong resale market means you can often secure a competitive trade-in valuation through Upway, making that premium purchase easier to justify over the long term.
