Super73 R Brooklyn E-Bike Review

The R Brooklyn is the flagship of Super73’s R-series, the brand’s highest-performance lineup. The frame uses mirrored tubes instead of a standard top, bottom, and seat tube arrangement. The battery sits low and forward right where a fuel tank would go, and the riding position drops you pretty low. Every R-series bike comes with front and rear suspension, a thumb throttle, and the ability to switch between Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, and an unrestricted Off-Road Mode via the Super73 app.

The throttle makes the R Brooklyn feel more like a motorcycle. Twist it, and the bike goes, so there’s no pedaling required, and in Off-Road Mode, you get a fair amount of acceleration, enough that riders hauling a combined weight over 300 lbs still get to 30 mph without much drama. On the street in Class 3, it holds its top assisted speed of 28 mph without feeling strained. This makes merging into city traffic at that speed feel much safer and more manageable.

This is a full-suspension e-Bike with an inverted front fork and an adjustable rear coil shock on a swingarm. The suspension, combined with the fat tires, makes riding over speed bumps, small divots, and jumping off curbs pretty pleasant. Off-road is a different story, though. The travel is tuned for street smoothness, not technical terrain, so if you want to ride dirt trails or loose gravel, you’ll reach the limits pretty quickly. This is a street bike wearing off-road styling, not the other way around.

The turning radius takes some getting used to, too. Between the wide tires and the motorcycle-style geometry, tight turns are noticeably wider than they would be on a standard bicycle, so it's worth keeping in mind the first few times you're picking your way through narrow streets or crowded bike lanes.

Tektro's two-piston hydraulic brakes with 180mm rotors stop well, and the motor cutoff sensors kill power the moment you squeeze a lever, adding more safety and control.

The single-speed drivetrain keeps things simple, but if the battery runs dry, pedaling 83 lbs of bike home is no fun at all. You can buy the Super73 with an optional 10-speed drivetrain for exactly that reason, though even that's been described as awkward given the bike's overall geometry.

The rear hub motor puts out 750W nominal and 1,200W peak across Classes 1 through 3. Switch to Off-Road Mode, an unrestricted setting meant for private land only, and peak output climbs past 2,000W, which is plenty to push the bike well beyond street-legal speeds; but you wouldn’t do that, would you?

The 960Wh battery sits low and forward on the frame, is removable for charging, and is UL 2271-rated for safety. Super73 claims up to 75 miles of range under gentle Class 1 pedal-assist use, though most owners report 40-55 miles once you factor in normal riding. Throttle-only riding eats into that further, down to 20 to 40 miles depending on how heavy-handed you are with it. Charging takes 6 to 7 hours with the included 3-amp charger, and it's worth getting into decent charging habits early, since battery longevity is important with a battery this large.

Everything connects through the Super73 app, which handles Class switching, firmware updates, turn-by-turn navigation on the bike's Smart Display, and live readouts for speed, battery, and range while you ride.

Off-Road Mode isn't street legal. It unlocks speeds and power well over Class 3 limits, and Super73 is pretty clear that it's meant for private land only, not public roads or bike paths.

The seat isn't for everyone. It looks the part, styled after a motorcycle bench seat, but comfort drops off noticeably after an hour in the saddle.

This is a heavy bike to pedal without assistance. At 83 lbs with a single-speed drivetrain, running the battery down far from home can turn getting back into a fair bit of work.

Super73's own S-series trades some of the R-series' power and suspension sophistication for a lighter, cheaper package. If the full moto experience isn't your thing, there's still a decent amount to like at a lower entry cost.

Wider, knobbier tires and full air suspension tuned closer to off-road use set the Super73 R Adventure apart from the street-oriented R Brooklyn. If you're planning to spend any serious time on dirt trails, that's the better pick.

A distinctive look like the R Brooklyn's tends to hold its appeal for years, which keeps demand fairly steady in the pre-owned market too.
