What Is The History Of Gazelle And Rad Power?

Gazelle started in 1892 (130 years strong, not a typo) in the Netherlands and is one of the oldest cycling brands. They are well known for quality and making both traditional and electric bikes that work and last.

Rad Power Bikes started in 2007 and has focused on affordable e-Bikes to help people get around and help with their everyday lives. As far as electric bike brands go, they are among the most recognized and got in on the e-Bike boom early.

The Different Bike Models From Rad Power Bikes And Gazelle

Rad Power Bikes and Gazelle both make similar types of bikes. They are both very focused on lifestyle bikes, which will help with commuting, shopping, days out exploring, and, in some cases, even taking the kids to school.

Rad Power Bikes Range

  • Rad Runner: Versatile utility e-Bike
  • Rad Rover: Fat tire e-Bike for mixed terrain
  • Rad City: Classic commuter e-Bike for urban riding
  • Rad Expand: Folding e-Bike for storage and transport
  • Rad Wagon: Long-tail cargo e-bike for families and heavy loads
  • Rad Kick: Lightweight, more affordable urban e-Bike

There’s not really a city bike that Rad Power Bikes doesn’t make. You might want the cargo bike for carrying heavy loads and as a car replacement, or the Rad kick for just speedy commutes to the office. The range is wide, and you have both bikes for on and off-road use.

Gazelle Bikes Range

  • Ultimate: Premium commuter e-Bike
  • Medeo: Versatile and more affordable entry e-Bike
  • Arroyo: Comfort-focused step-through e-Bike
  • Grenoble: Luxury touring e-Bike
  • Chamonix: Hybrid-style e-Bike for everyday riding

Gazelle bikes focus more on leisure riding and commuting bikes over utility bikes. They are a very refined ride, but as a company, they are very niche for commuting and days out on light terrain.

Who Has The Better Value? Rad Power Bikes Or Gazelle?

Pricing is one of the biggest differences between these two brands. If you were to buy a Rad Power Bike new, you would spend around $1,300 to $2,500 and get a lot of bike for that money. Gazelle, you are looking at between $2,500 to $5,000 or even more.

This isn’t cheap vs expensive, and it’s really important to understand that. This is value vs premium comfort. Both brands offer excellent value for money, and I don’t feel you are getting a bad deal from either. Even though you are paying 1.5x to 2x the money for a Gazelle.

What Are You Actually Paying For?

Rad Power Bikes:

  • Affordable hub motor systems
  • Feature-packed bikes (racks, lights, utility focus)
  • Strong value
  • Lower upfront cost

With Gazelle:

  • Premium Bosch motor systems
  • High-end frame design
  • Smoother, quieter, more refined riding
  • Better long-term durability and finish

What About Riding Experience? Rad Power Bikes Vs Gazelle

There’s a very clear difference between the experience you get when riding a Rad Power Bikes and a Gazelle. The Rad Power Bikes are heavier. They feel a little punchier and are designed to let you ride with minimal effort. It really feels like you're on a bike with a motor and battery or a utility vehicle.

Riding a Gazelle is much more natural. It feels like you're riding a bike, but it’s just much easier. The power delivery is silky smooth, and the bike has redefined comfort that Rad Power Bikes just doesn’t seem to offer. You also get high-quality components such as hydraulic disc brakes, a front light, and often a rear light, which are excellent for off-road and urban riders.

Motor And Battery

A lot of this riding experience comes down to the motor and battery, and this is where Rad Power Bikes and Gazelle really set themself apart. Gazelle uses a Bosch motor system, which is a mid-drive system that keeps the weight nice and low, and the feel super natural, like what we see on top-end e-MTB (electric mountain bikes)

Rad Power uses its own motor system mounted to the rear wheel, and the battery is farther away. It is a big savings to go this route, but it doesn’t give the same riding feel as a mid-drive motor. Even looking at the statistics, it has what it needs. It’s just more punchy with a good maximum torque.

Rad Power Bikes Current Situation!

Before we start answering your questions, we must discuss the current situation with Rad Power Bikes. In late 2025, they filed for bankruptcy and were bought by Life EV Group. They had a major battery recall on certain models due to the risk of fire and explosion.

Models included RadRunner, RadRover, and Radwagon. They did not proceed to a full recall while disputing safety claims and saying it would ruin the company. Plans are in place to replace batteries (Partially Subsidized). The new models, like the “Safe Shield,” are not affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Gazelle bikes more expensive?

VGazelle uses Bosch mid-drive motor systems, higher-quality frames, and premium components. This results in a smoother, quieter, and more comfortable riding experience. Much better for long distances, in my personal opinion.

Which brand is better for long-distance riding?

Gazelle is the better option for long-distance riding thanks to its more efficient motor systems, comfortable geometry, and refined ride feel. Rad Power will still work, but it won’t offer the same.
Should I be concerned about Rad Power Bikes’ recent issues?
Rad Power Bikes is still operating under new ownership after restructuring. While past battery issues affected certain models, newer bikes and systems have been improved. It’s worth checking the specific model and battery type when buying.

Key Takeaways

  1. Value vs Premium Comfort: Rad Power Bikes focuses on affordability and practicality while keeping the price low. Gazelle focuses not just on a premium frame design with an in-frame battery and motor, but also on components like hydraulic brakes.
  2. Ride Feel Is the Biggest Difference: Rad Power Bikes feel more like a motor-assisted tool because they use a cadence sensor, while Gazelle bikes feel smooth, natural, and effortless to ride because they typically use a torque sensor.
  3. Pay Less or Ride Better: Rad Power offers great value for money, but Gazelle offers a higher-quality bike that’s more enjoyable and better suited for long-term use, with a better pedal-assist function and much more.
