What Is A Trekking E-Bike?

Step-through e-Bikes for trekking have become very popular in recent years, and so many cyclists are out enjoying paths and canal stretches like never before, going further and faster with the extra assistance of a motor and battery.

What Is Trekking?

TTrekking is casual touring on a comfortable, practical bike. It’s exploring with maximum comfort. Typically, you're not going away for months at a time. It’s day rides, weekends, and lightweight touring with minimal gear, and possibly hotels, not camping. It's not extreme. It's roads, paths, and light gravel, not epic downhill trails.

What Makes A Great Step-Through Trekking Bike

Trekking step-through e-Bikes have some general characteristics you should look out for. Here’s what I personally look for in trekking step-through e-Bikes.

Easy To Get On And Off

What makes step-through e-Bikes so much more accessible than others is the ability to step through, not over. Easy mount and dismount. You are basically removing the top tube of the bike, which takes it out of being a mountain or road bike in terms of its frame design. It might be that you have mobility issues or just prefer the ease of a step-through. Whatever your reason, they do make this so much simpler.

Stability & Comfort

Step-through electric bikes are made to make the riding as easy as possible for the cyclist. The frame keeps the weight low, giving it greater stability and a sturdy feel. Having a low stand-over height means starting and stopping is easy. Also, for your comfort, you get a relaxed frame geometry, high handlebars, and a wide, cushioned seat, making it easy to ride.

Accessories

Most step-through trekking bikes come fully equipped. We’re talking racks for carrying, lighting to get you home at night, and some even have USB chargers on. These make a noticeable difference to the experience and are great for city dwellers or urban commuters who use the bike.

Battery & Range

Battery power is there to help us, not do all the work for us. The more we have, the better, and combining it with a mid-power motor to prevent it from draining too quickly is a good approach. We recommend 500Wh batteries, but more or less will work depending on the terrain and distance you want to cover.

Top Recommended Step-Through Trekking E-Bike

Aventon Level – Best for Urban Touring

Aventon Level
SpecificationDetails
MotorRear hub motor (500W)
Battery capacity672Wh integrated
SuspensionFront suspension fork (~65mm travel)
Wheel size 27.5” with commuter tyres
Frame materialAluminium step-through
Aventon makes an excellent trekking bike. Not only do they tick all the boxes, but they look stunning. The hardtail mountain bike features a 500W rear hub motor and a 672Wh battery, providing ample range and making hills and headwinds easy to handle.

The low step-through frame makes getting on and off easy, and you have disc brakes, fenders, and suspension forks to help improve comfort on long weekend treks. It’s a great performer with a smooth pedal assist and hydraulic disc brakes. The only drawback for us is that you have to add your own rack.

Pros

  • Strong battery for longer rides
  • Fast and efficient on roads
  • Easy-access step-through frame

Cons

  • No rack
  • The hub motor is less natural than the mid-drive

Perfect for urban touring, commuting, and long-distance rides on roads and cycle paths.

Batch E-Step Thru – Best Budget Touring Option

Batch E-Step
SpecificationDetails
MotorRear hub motor (250W)
Battery capacity400Wh integrated
SuspensionFront suspension fork
Wheel size27.5” with comfort tyres
Frame materialAluminium step-through
If you are on a tighter budget and looking for an amazing-value trekking e-Bike, the Batch E-Step Thru is a great option. A 350W rear hub motor combined with a 360Wh battery capacity makes for good mileage, provided you're not pushing it to max assistance.

The Batch E-Step Thru is a simple, affordable entry into electric touring. It’s designed to be easy to ride, low-maintenance, and comfortable for shorter trips and casual adventures. The step-through frame enhances accessibility, making it ideal for riders new to e-Bikes.

The smaller 400Wh battery paired with the 250W motor gives good mileage, but you don’t have the same level of power as the Aventon. For the price, it delivers a lot of value, and you can add your accessories, ready to get exploring.

Pros

  • Affordable and accessible
  • Easy to ride and maintain
  • Comfortable upright position

Cons

  • Not many accessories
  • Not hugely powerful

Perfect for short-distance touring, casual rides, and budget-conscious riders.

Gazelle Medeo T9 HMB Mid-Step – Best Value All-Rounder

Gazelle Medeo T9 HMB
SpecificationDetails
MotorBosch Active Line Plus (50Nm)
Battery capacity400–500Wh integrated
SuspensionFront suspension fork
Wheel size700c with wide touring tyres
Frame materialAluminium Mid Step
Gazelle is a major player in e-Bikes and is known for making premium bikes. The Medeo T9 HMB is a mid-step bike and boasts excellent specifications, including a Bosch Active Line Plus electric motor and a 400-500Wh battery for those long days out.

It comes with a lovely upright riding position for comfort and a range of great accessories, including lighting for 24/7 visibility, fenders, a rear rack, and front suspension for those testing bike paths. There’s very little not to like about this city e-Bike, even though the battery range isn't the longest.

Pros

  • Smooth and quiet motor (Mid Drive motor)
  • Comfortable and stable ride
  • Great all-round value

Cons

  • More expensive than other brands
  • Not the lightest of bikes

Perfect for everyday touring, commuting, and riders who want a reliable, versatile step-through e-Bike.

Velotric Packer 1 – Best for Cargo Touring

Velotric Packer
SpecificationDetails
Motor750W rear hub motor (1200W peak)
Battery capacity690Wh integrated (up to ~52 miles range)
SuspensionFront suspension fork (~80mm travel)
Wheel size26” front / 20” rear with wide puncture-resistant tyres
Frame materialAluminium step-through bicycle (longtail cargo)
If you're looking for a trekking bike that can take everything you need, then the Velotric Packer 1 is a perfect solution. It’s what I would call a cargo tourer/trekker. A cargo bike, but designed more for days out than carrying hundreds of packages. Instead, it will carry picnics and even people with a max capacity of 440lbs.

With a 750W motor and 690Wh battery, there are plenty of miles on the bike to keep you going, but the work is tough if you run out of power, as the bike is very heavy to pedal. It’s great for the family, and there’s nothing it can’t carry.

Pros

  • Huge carrying capacity for gear or passengers
  • Powerful motor handles heavy loads easily
  • Stable and confidence-inspiring ride

Cons

  • Heavy and less efficient for long distances
  • Not ideal for fast road touring

Perfect for cargo touring, family rides, and riders who want to carry serious gear without worrying about weight limits.
