How Did Water Get Into My E-Bike?
Water can get into your e-Bike. Although they are designed to be pretty water-resistant, they are not waterproof. Here are the most common ways I see bikes come into my shop with water damage.
- Riding through deep puddles or floodwater
- Heavy rain

- Damaged rubber seals or gaskets
- Leaving the charging port uncovered
- Accidentally submerging the bike
It’s hard to avoid an e-Bike getting wet. It might be a fall into a small crossing on a river, or just some incredibly bad weather that can catch you out. Most of the time I see it, it’s often damaged seals which have just gone a little brittle over time.
When Is Water Damage a Problem?
There are times when certain rain damage is going to be too much for a bike. Firstly, if you ever get the bike acting strangely after water ingress, you must stop using it. Here are different situations you might want to be cautious of, and times you shouldn’t worry.

What To Do If Your E-Bike Gets Wet
Step 1: Stop!
The first step is to stop and find a safe place. Try to avoid using the bike, as this could make it worse. Just jump off and walk it somewhere out of the way and preferably out of any water. You will want to get the bike home either by riding it as a traditional bike or by getting a lift.
Step 2: Remove the Battery And Plugs
Next, I would get the battery off the bike if possible. Leave it somewhere dry and at room temperature so anything inside can dry out. You will also want to remove any plugs that go to the display or any sensors to let them dry out too.
Step 3: Inspections
At this point, I like to spend some time inspecting where water might have gotten in or caused damage. I look inside plugs and connectors for any corrosion, check any seals or cabling for damage, then also check the battery, display, and any other sensors for cracks in the unit.
Step 4: Repairs And Drying
If you do find a bad seal or something broken, it’s good to start by replacing that part. At this point, start drying any connections that might be wet, and any stagnant water that might be sitting in places in the bike. Then leave it overnight for it to air-dry completely.
Step 5: Test
Once all dry, refit the battery and then turn it on. The first thing to look for is any error codes coming up on the screen. They will often tell you if anything has been damaged. If all clear, get out on a ride locally and see if it’s all ok. If you have any issues, move to step 6. If not, continue riding and have some fun.
