How We Inspect a Used e-Bike
As a tenet, we adhere to the saying, “expect what you inspect.” At Upway, once a bike arrives, it undergoes a methodical 50-point inspection. It’s absolutely critical. There’s just so much that can go sideways without a nook-and-cranny, wheel-to-wheel review.
An e-Bike motor can ride wonderfully on the test ride but be corroded on the inside. A seemingly insignificant chain roll hiccup could cost a few hundred dollars if sprocket teeth are worn and the chain stretched. Then you have to watch for those hairline cracks. They’re covertly cosmetic yet potentially catastrophic (hidden dangers that can fracture frames without warning).
Just ask Upway’s LA Head of Mechanic Colin Vallee. He’s been wrenching on bikes of all sorts for years and has spent his days putting hundreds of e-Bikes back on the road.
“If we spot any worn-out transmission parts, we replace them. We check every bike component, including the drivetrain (chain, cassette, chainrings, derailleurs, derailleur alignment), brakes, headset, cockpit, wheels, saddle, and more,” Vallee said. “Anything worn out is replaced, and every bike gets a full tune-up. It’s the ‘Extreme Makeover: Bike Edition!’”
Vallee said a point-by-point review is the best preventative medicine against bad bikes. We start by examining the frame and steering for any cracks or corrosion, making sure the stem and handlebars are secure and in excellent condition. Our brake check promises smooth, safe stopping, with every lever, disc, and pad in top shape.
In the wheels and tires department, we confirm that everything spins true. Spokes are perfectly tensioned, tires are road-ready with proper inflation, and wheels are aligned and warp-free. The drivetrain, including the chainring and cassette, is greased and primed for seamless gear transitions.
Next, we turn our attention to the electrical components. We test the battery for at least 80% capacity and double-check it has a compatible, working charger. The motor undergoes performance checks to confirm reliable assistance, and all electronic connectors and sensors are tested for precision.
These are just a few items on our long list.
Before wrapping up, we secure all accessories like mudguards and luggage racks, check the stability of the bike stand, and verify the safety features. The bike is thoroughly cleaned, leaving it spotless and free of residue, and we wrap things up with a real-world test ride to ensure flawless operation.
From sourcing to inspection, our process acts as the best preventive medicine to avoid issues and make sure your bike unboxing is everything you expect it to be. Outside of this, we also make sure to source our bikes from proven EU and US e-Bike brands, bike shops, and owners.
