Why Is E-Bike Commuting The Way Forward?

New York's cycling infrastructure is changing rapidly, and a lot of money is being invested to improve it. We are getting more protected bike lanes, dedicated bike routes, more greenways, and bike bridges, and it couldn’t be more exciting.

The number of bikes in NYC is on the rise, and with public transport becoming more costly and often less reliable, and car traffic increasing, many are taking to the bike, and renting is the best option for most.

What Is Renting An E-Bike With Upway Flex Monthly?

Upway has just launched its latest rental service, Upway Flex. Instead of buying an e-Bike, you can rent one, which offers many benefits and is very affordable. Here’s what you need to know and how you do it!

Step 1: Check Out The Bikes And Prices

The first step is to check out all the different types of bikes we have at multiple price points. You will find folding bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, cargo bikes, commuter bikes, and much more, all at very affordable monthly prices.

$79 per month E-bikes

$99 per month E-bikes

$119 per month E-bikes

Premium models are available between $139 to $239 if you are looking for something high-end or unique. If you change your mind later on the bike you want or your needs change, you can swap yours out for another bike. That’s the beauty of renting compared to buying. We recommend acity bike to get you started in New York.

Step 2: Organise An Appointment

Next, you will want to organise your appointment at the NYC Upway store. Come and take a look at the bikes. Ask all the questions you need to ask and enjoy some time checking out how amazing modern e-Bikes have become.

Step 3: Rent Your Bike

If you're happy and want to proceed, you will pay a $100 refundable deposit and the first month's rent for the bike. Then, servicing will be discussed, as it’s included with unlimited mileage. Typically, this is done twice a year as bikes come with unlimited biking.

Once this is done, it’s time to set up your free insurance. Not only is this included in the price, but it also covers theft and accidental damage, so you can ride your bike without worrying that if something happens, you will have to pay out.

Step 4: Setup

Finally, it’s time for you to get set up on your bike. We will show you how it all works, get the seat height right, and make any needed adjustments. Once that is all done, you ride out the door and enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of New York on an e-Bike. Central Park is a must of course.

Is It Better To Buy Or Rent An E-Bike?

We often get asked, " Is it better to buy or rent an e-Bike?” Well, surprisingly, like with many modern systems, such as appliances and even car leasing, renting often works out much cheaper. Here’s a small table to help you understand.

Commuting Option

Upfront Cost

Monthly Cost

Insurance

Total 5 Years

Monthly Bike Rental

$99

$0 (Included)

$5,940

Daily Bike Rentals

Public Transport (Subway/Bus)

Owning an E-Bike

$4,000-$6000

~$30–$50/month

$8,800–$10,000

It just goes to show the difference in pricing, and the fact that you can return it for months at a time when you are not using it can further reduce the cost if you don’t want to commute in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What safety gear should I use when commuting on an e-Bike?

Helmet, high-vis clothing for you, and lighting are often standard on e-Bikes. The more you can be seen, the safer you are.

Can I ride an e-Bike in all weather conditions?

Of course. E-Bikes are designed to be ridden in all conditions. You can’t use them underwater, but in general weather, yes. They even come with hydraulic brakes, mostly, which are amazing in the wet.

How far can I typically travel on a single e-Bike charge?
Typically, an e-bike can travel 20 to 50 miles. Riding more and using less assist gets you further. The terrain, especially uphill and downhill work, also significantly affects battery life.
Is Upway Flex like a scooter rental or a Citi Bike?
No. Upway Flex is more personal. It's your bike, which you get to use, and they are much better using brands such as Specialized electric bikes. You can even add bike bags or children's trailers. It's not a bikeshare program.
