Bosch: Industry-leading, reliable e-Bike batteries
When it comes to electric bike batteries and mid-drive motors, Bosch reigns supreme. The long-standing German electronics brand makes high-quality rechargeable batteries that deliver excellent performance and range. Here’s all you need to know to pick out the Bosch eBike battery that’s right for you.
Two Bosch E-Bike Systems
Bosch currently offers two distinct e-Bike ecosystems: the Smart System and eBike System 2. Most newer electric bikes with Bosch components will have the Smart System, while the older eBike System 2 is common on many pre-owned models.
Bosch Smart System
Launched in 2021, the Smart System represents Bosch’s most advanced platform yet. Every component— from the drive unit to the display— connects seamlessly with the eBike Flow app. This integration gives riders access to features like advanced settings customization, over-the-air updates, and even an optional theft-protection alarm. As Bosch software continues to roll out new functions, they can be added directly through the app, so your e-Bike always stays up-to-date.
Bosch eBike System 2
Introduced in 2013, Bosch’s System 2 has long been a benchmark in the e-Bike world. The product line offers a broad selection of motors, batteries, and displays that manufacturers can mix and match to suit their models. Riders can pair it with the original eBike Connect app for navigation, route planning, and motor tuning. While it doesn’t have the same level of app-based updates as the newer Smart System, it still remains a versatile and proven choice trusted by many bike brands.
Bosch Drive Unit Compatibility
A crucial part of the Bosch ecosystem is the drive unit powered by the lithium-ion battery, which, in turn, propels your electric bike forward. Motor models include the Bosch Active, Bosch Cargo, and Bosch Performance Line, designed for certain uses and top speeds. Most Bosch batteries can power any Bosch drive unit, so you don’t have to worry about compatibility.
Guide to Bosch E-Bike Batteries
Bosch manufactures a wide range of electric bike batteries that cover all the bases, matching a model’s exact needs regarding capacity, size, and battery location.
PowerPack Frame
Mounted externally on the seat tube or downtube, Bosch PowerPack Frame batteries are designed for easy removal and use. Each battery has a built-in carry handle for transport and LED indicators that display remaining charge at a glance. Within Bosch’s Smart System, these batteries share a universal frame mount, so riders can easily swap them across different models. PowerPack frame batteries are one of the most common Bosch battery types.
PowerPack Rack
Bosch’s rack-mounted batteries sit on top of or within the rear rack— it’s a setup that’s frequently seen on certain city e-Bikes, cruisers, and step-through e-Bikes. Positioning the battery at the back keeps the bike’s frame clear and open, making mounting and dismounting easier. The rear-located placement can add weight to the back of the bike, but taking the battery out is quick and hassle-free when it’s time to charge off the bike. The Power Pack 500, for example, is a common battery capacity option.
PowerTube
Bosch’s PowerTube batteries are built directly into the bike’s frame, giving them a more seamless look. A locking mechanism secures the battery in place so it won’t dislodge during rides, but removal for charging or swapping is still simple. PowerTube batteries are especially popular on performance-focused models like electric mountain bikes and road e-Bikes.
There are vertical and horizontal PowerTube batteries. The vertical pack— typically housed inside the downtube— is by far the most common. Horizontal PowerTubes are rare and usually found only on bikes with a dual-battery system.
PowerTube batteries are available with 500, 600, Bosch PowerTube 625, 750, and 800 Wh capacities. Within the Smart System, the PowerTube 600 and PowerTube 800 are designed to be interchangeable, provided the bike manufacturer supports the swap.
CompactTube
For an even more streamlined, barely-there look, Bosch offers the CompactTube, which also sits inside the downtube. Weighing just about 2 kg, the CompactTube 400 Wh battery is ideal for lightweight e-MTBs, performance-focused gravel e-Bikes, and minimalist models where every gram counts.
Bosch Range Extender: PowerMore 250
Bosch offers the PowerMore 250, a compact auxiliary battery designed to supplement your e-Bike’s main pack. Roughly the size of a water bottle, it fits neatly in the frame’s bottle cage mount, giving you extra range for longer rides.
