Does Getting An Error Code Mean I Need A New E-Bike?

Although N+1 is a solid cycling rule, meaning there’s always room for another bike on top of what you have in this case, it doesn’t apply. Getting an error code doesn’t mean you need a new bike. It just means your bike needs some attention.

Error codes can be as simple as the battery being too cold to work, the brake lever still on, or a magnet on the rear wheel having moved. These are very simple fixes that nearly any cyclist can do. Around 80% of error codes can be fixed at home by yourself.

There are some more serious error codes, but these are rare and don’t come up very often. It is important to understand that an error code is the bike's way of communicating with you to let you know it needs help.

What Are Tenway E-Bikes?

Tenways was founded in 2021. A group of cycling and e-mobility enthusiasts came up with the idea. They make an excellent bike, not just focusing on style and power, but also on practicality. They make commuter, city, hybrid, cargo, and even allroad bikes.

Brand Or Motor: What Makes The Error Code?

Before we get into speaking about the error codes, it’s good to understand that the error code doesn’t come from the whole bike. The error code comes from the motor and battery system. So, no matter what brand of bike you have, they might share the same error codes. Aventon, Lectric, and many other brands use Bafang motors.

Tenways or Bafang

Tensways have their own motors on many of their bikes, but they also outsource to Bafang on others. This can make it challenging, as many of the codes mean the same thing. In the next section, we will explain the codes and what they mean.

Tenways E-Bike Error Code List

Now for the exciting part, let’s start exploring these codes. We will list the codes (Tenway/Bafang), what they mean, and then give a brief explanation of how to fix them.

Error Code 0x07/27 Battery Voltage Too High

This occurs when the battery voltage is too high, and the bike shuts down to protect its components. Comes from a charging error, battery fault, or a controller fault.
When it comes to overvoltage, it’s often a simple fix. Turn the bike off, remove the battery for 5 minutes, reseat, and return to riding. If the error persists, then get the battery test and check the charger to make sure it’s original.

Error Code 0x08/24 Motor Hall Sensor Error

This is known as a motor hall sensor error. This is when the sensor in the motor isn’t working.

To fix this error, we recommend resetting the bike and starting it again. If the error persists, it will need to be inspected by an e-Bike mechanic or dealer.

Error Code 0x12/21 Current Sensor Error

This is when the bike is detecting an abnormal current. It’s a very vague error, but it's important for protecting the components from damage.

Restart the bike. Hopefully, it was just a glitch. If not, switch the bike off and check the wiring and connectors for damage, dirt, or water ingress. If none of that helps, see the dealer.

Error Code 0x14 Controller Over Temperature

If your controller gets too hot, then there’s a risk that things on the bike could go very wrong. Often caused by too much assistance for too long or a controller fault.

First, reset the bike and let the controller cool. Start again and try reducing the assistance level for extended periods. If this doesn’t fix the code, see an expert.

Error Code 0x21/28 Speed Sensor Error

The speed sensor is a small component on the rear chainstay that detects a magnet on the wheel to measure how quickly the wheel is spinning. These faults often come from a misaligned sensor.

Check the rear wheel and ensure that the magnet and speed sensor line up. Then give it all a clean. If the error code returns, it’s almost certainly a faulty speed sensor.

Error Code 0x25/22, 25 Abnormal Sensor Error

An abnormal sensor occurs when the bike receives bad data from a sensor. It could be a speed sensor, brake sensor, or cadence sensor. It can be challenging to diagnose.

In this situation, it's important to check the wiring around the bike and the connectors. Ensure they are not damaged, and there’s no mud or water ingress. Once checked, hopefully it will work again. If not, it should see an expert to find the root cause.

Error Code 0x30/30 Communication Error

A communication error typically comes from poor communication between the controller and another part of the bike. Most of the time, it’s the display sensor, but it can be in other places as well.

Check wiring and connections, especially around the display and the controller. If you find anything out of place, that will more than likely be the issue. If not, it might be worth seeing an expert for a diagnosis. It could even be a faulty controller.

Error Code 23 Motor Phase Error

A motor phase error occurs when the controller-to-motor connection is incorrect. There are 3-phase wires. If one is damaged or broken, the bike will not start.

Check the bike's wiring from the controller to the motor. If there’s any damage, they will need to be replaced. You will also want to remove the connectors and check the inside for missing pins or water ingress.

Error Code 26 Battery Voltage Too Low

A low battery voltage can prevent the bike from starting and often indicates a problem with the battery being too cold or having too many aged cells.

Bring the battery back to room temperature, then fully charge it with the original manufacturer's charger. Once fully popped back on the bike, and if it doesn’t work, then it needs testing to see if a replacement is required.

How Do I Stop Error Codes On My E-Bike?

Surprisingly, there’s a lot you can do to prevent error codes from happening to your bike. Here’s what you need to know.
  • A clean bike reduces the risk of mud in connections and wire degradation.
  • Regular checks for damage and wear are vital for seeing problems before they occur.
  • Only use the original manufacturer's charge and not an aftermarket version.
  • Regular firmware updates stop possible glitches.
  • Regular servicing ensures components work as well as they can.

When Should I See A Tenways Dealer With An Error Code?

There’s nothing wrong with seeing a dealer for help and support. Although you can work on your e-Bike yourself, sometimes it's easier to have someone do it for you.

The times we definitely recommend seeing an expert are when the problem is internal, such as the motor or the battery. Thinking about a new electric bike? Check out all the bikes on Upway for some incredible options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep riding if my Tenways e-Bike shows an error code?

Less serious errors may allow limited assistance. If power cuts out or the code keeps coming up, it’s best to stop riding and get it fixed.

Can cold weather cause Tenways error codes?

Yes. Low temperatures can trigger battery undervoltage. It is more common if the battery is low on the bike.
Can I fix Tenways error codes myself?
Yeah, of course. A bike reset is an easy fix for many common errors. Little jobs such as sensor changes are possible too.

Key Takeaways

  1. Error codes are there for the bike's safety. They protect it from harming itself or damaging the components. Similar to a car and the engine management system.
  2. Many common errors are easy to fix at home. Restarting the bike can fix glitches. Sensor changes are not too awful. Most things can be done by yourself unless it’s internal.
  3. It's important to see a mechanic when you get serious errors. Opening batteries and motors is not recommended and can be quite dangerous. It's good to know when to seek help.
